Move over Main Line Mama...You Can't Compete With Baldwin's Dirty Laundry....

Disclaimer: No nouveau riche McMansion dwellers were injured in this post. It's just us the little people who don't like million dollar condo boxes, bad behavior, and misplaced senses of entitlement. Whether anyone likes it or not, the First Amendment still means something. If you agree with this post or it makes you giggle, please feel free to say so. If the post insults your misplaced sense of entitlement and Amex platinum card, you may also say so. But if you harrangue the webmaster with drivel, we hope he says so and posts your comments too.

Narrator:Please join Buffy and Tripper and their conversation....they are talking to each other on their blue tooths, so their conversations can be easily overheard (well, they are so loud in their conversations taking place at Whole Foods and at Pilates, that you can hear them anyway....)

"Oh Buffy, it is simply too shocking for words! One of our illustrious hallowed halls of overpriced Main Line Learning is in Philadelphia Magazine!"

"Oh how shocking Tripper! Can you imagine all the chatter at the "club" now? They won't be dishing merely who is up for membership and what to do with those pesky assessments."

"Too true, Buffy. They will be talking about the schools! Can you imagine? It's just like that horrid blog and that small minded group of mean spirited individuals who don't like eminent domain and ruined all your stucco shopping opportunities a couple years ago!"

"Not only that Tripper, but we'll find out who raises their own children. After all WHO raises their own children anymore? That is like giving yourself a manicure! Why do it yourself when you can pay someone else to do it and be utterly obnoxious about it?"

"Oh Buffy, next they'll be talking about our cars - the size, excessive numbers of them and how we drive. Speaking of which, honey sweetie pie, when you are going to tennis and botox, you really need to stop at those stop signs and traffic signals. Pedestrians are annoying, but they aren't optional"

[indignant squeal]"That's it Tripper! You have crossed a line and are a fine one to talk with that $25,000 cell phone bill each month! Pay up buddy..that comment will cost you... better get me that new Prada bag with matching thigh high boots or NO MORE nooky for you - you'll have to get it from the nanny!"

"Oh please, Buffy, like you would do that? Then it would get messy, you would throw organic carrots and your pink Razor phone at someone, and where would we be? Watching you on the news in a bad powder blue pants suit without the botox like that Main Line Mama Temper woman...there is no pilates in Montgomery County Jail and you hate Norristown! Just chill and read the article! I have to go buy a new Hummer and fire a bunch of people, and check on our new McMansion, do you think 5 garage bays are overkill?"

"Tripper I just don't know if I can decorate 5 garage bays! Those are a lot of "car moods"...well maybe I will check out First Friday Main Line tonight. I heard it's the new Main Line thing to do...kisses and talk to you later...bye"

"Later Buffy"

Too true, Buffy and Tripper, the entire area is agog still over Baldwin-The Teacher-Spoiled Rich Parents-The Money Hook-and The Case of the Bratty Kid. We're sure several someones will get their monogrammed knickers in a twist over this one...but all Philadelphia Magazine does again is point out how ridiculous we've allowed the Main Line to become. How we have forgotten to respect educators and raise our own children. This is just another case of misplaced senses of spoiled entitlement pay to get what they want...only they are not pitching bags of organic carrots like Susan Tabas Temper, they are paying others to do their dirty deeds. Heaven forbid they actually consider the fact that a spoiled child might just be a spoiled child they don't know very well because then they might have to admit they were spoiled, obnoxious adults as well? This teacher gave her life to this school....until Mr and Mrs Nouveau Riche rolled up and donated a fat check to a headmistress sucking up as her own form of job security and isn't that how this story goes? The sad saga of the Nouveau Main Line continues? We'll give away the Barnes Museum, fire all the teachers (check other schools, bet this isn't the only story like this going on), bulldoze all the charming and historic homes for Garage Mahals and Milliion Dollar Condo Ghettos, ok whatever Harriton High School wants and screw over Lower Merion High School, etc, etc.

To say you were from the Main Line used to mean something....now it is just so very truly embarassing.

So read the article and don't forget about the comments section - they are even better then the article.

Philadelphia Magazine: Class Warfare By Jessica Pressler

On a hot afternoon in July, Patricia “Patsy” Tollin, a former teacher at the prestigious Baldwin School and the plaintiff in a lawsuit that has had the Main Line talking all summer, is sitting in her lawyer’s Bala Cynwyd office, describing an incident in which she says Sheryl Pouls, the parent of one of Tollin’s former second-grade students, showed off a pair of surgically altered breasts in a Baldwin School classroom as Tollin and another parent looked on. “She opened her shirt and said, ‘Look how small they are!’” says Tollin, pursing her lips in the manner of a schoolmarm, which is what she is. “I couldn’t tell.”

.....The drama has made the Baldwin Battle the most riveting Main Line scandal since, well, Susan Tabas Tepper chucked a bag of carrots at her nanny last year. In fact, according to Tollin, the Poulses made the Royal Bank heiress, who was convicted earlier this year of mistreating her staff, look like a regular Donna Reed.

“I had Susan Tabas Tepper’s daughter in the same class,” Tollin says. “Susan was warm, she read to the children, brought them treats.” She shrugs. “She was a delight.”

...Of these stories, few were more salacious than the wild ones told by the players themselves. “I know a woman,” says Michael Pouls, 45, a mountain of a man with dark hair, preternaturally white, straight teeth, and a permanently furrowed brow, “who will tell you she witnessed Patsy Tollin throwing a blind child into a locker.”

......There’s also been a shift in values, Mark Halpern will tell you, and not for the better.

“It’s not how it used to be,” he says disgustedly. “It used to be that you’re not bravado. You weren’t driving around in your Hummers. It used to be huge estates with incredible money, but those people would never — it was embarrassing to show your money. It was beneath you. You never tried to use your money for anything other than philanthropic things. You would send your kids to school, and if the teacher was strict, you would say, ‘That’s the way it is.’”...“You know we need this family,” Sally Powell said then, according to Tollin — the implication being that the school couldn’t afford to lose the Poulses’ donation. (Powell denies saying this.)....At the conclusion of the meeting, according to Tollin’s complaint, Powell said that if Tollin didn’t “fully satisfy the Poulses,” she would have to “rethink” Tollin’s contract....“Oh, I love my new teacher,” Amanda responded, according to her father. “She gives us candy. But I think Mrs. Tollin is mad.”

“Why is that?” Pouls asked.

“I think it’s because I’m not in her class anymore. She misses me.”

Her father asked why she thought that. “Because when I saw her in the hallway,” Amanda told him, “I waved at her and she didn’t wave back.”

“And I knew,” says Michael Pouls. “That the teacher was staring my daughter down.”

It was then, Sheryl Pouls says, that she grew tired of being politically correct....“I lost my composure,” Sheryl says..“You f***ing bitch! I want you fired or I’m taking my money and my girls out of this school!”

NICE POTTY MOUTH GENTEEL MOMMY...again...read the comments Philly Mag is allowing to be posted..they are truly delightful...

"The Pouls should have been included in the previous issue of your magazine. I worked for them for several months, and all I saw was spoiled childeren, an absentee father who spent a lot of money to keep everyone happy, rude behavior from the entire family..."

and

"....assume that most of these letters are from people that live on the Main Line. First of all, if this teacher was such a menace, she would have been fired. Second, the point that Mrs. Tollin made about not knowing how to use utensils ...simply a statement that these children are raised by nannies and other hired help. Did Sheryl Pouls ever have a job??? No, but she has a full staff, including 2 people just to play with her children! (Someone should check their working papers during this investigation)....They should be reminded that they are from Cherry Hill, not Beverly Hills. "

and

"...I have read this article in it's entirety and have come to the conclusion that parents need to allow the teachers and administrators to do their jobs. Yelling is not abuse..."

and

"....My question is where was the Board of Trustees in this whole mess? How could they possibly have allowed Baldwin's reputation to be sullied for the sake of a gymanasium....

and

"...Money can buy a lot, but not friends or class or the ability to know when to do the right thing. And when to know that your children may be your blessing, but not everyone else things they are perfect...."

New allegations in Baldwin suit
By Martha Woodall
Inquirer Staff Writer

The second-grade teacher who is suing the Baldwin School and the Gladwyne family she said caused her to lose her job is making new allegations: witness intimidation, obstruction of justice, and defamation.
In court documents filed late yesterday, Patricia Tollin alleges that the Main Line girls' school and Michael and Sheryl Pouls "have engaged in a pattern of harassing and intimidating witnesses in this matter . . . both on and off the Baldwin School campus."

For example, the amended complaint alleges that a Baldwin trustee "offered a witness in this matter a 'scholarship' for the witness' child, in exchange for testimony favorable to the defendants."

In addition, Tollin, who taught at Baldwin for 22 years, alleges that Michael Pouls defamed her in a recent Philadelphia Magazine article by falsely accusing her of throwing a blind student against a locker.

The woman whom Michael Pouls said had witnessed the incident recanted the account and said there were no blind children at Baldwin, the article reported.

The documents filed in Montgomery County Court seek to amend Tollin's original June 4 complaint to include the new allegations.

With regard to the article's reference to Class Warfare by Jessica Pressler, we strongly suggest everyone out there read the comments left by the overpriced mommy and me set.

Couple sued by Baldwin School teacher file response claiming she had poor record
By Martha Woodall
INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

The Gladwyne couple who are being sued by a former second grade teacher on grounds they cost her her job at The Baldwin School have responded to her allegations by detailing 72 complaints from parents and others about her loud, threatening classroom manner.
In documents filed yesterday afternoon, Michael and Sheryl Pouls charged that rather than being the model teacher as she has claimed, Patricia Tollin "had one of the worst records--if not the worst record--of all the teachers in the roughly 120 year history of The Baldwin School."

The documents from the Poulses includes a counterclaim in which they are suing Tollin for defamation, invasion of privacy, assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

The 86-page file from the Pouls family is the latest salvo in a bitter, Main Line dispute that erupted in June when Patricia Tollin, 67, filed suit against the Poulses and against the private girls' school in Bryn Mawr where she had taught for 22 years.

In her complaint, Tollin alleged that rather than risk a mult-million gift for a new athletic facility promised by the Poulses, Baldwin's new head of school sided with them and did not offer Tollin a new, one-year teaching contract for the current school year.

The family had complained to Baldwin officials that Tollin had shouted at and humiliated their second-grade daughter during the last school year.

The Poulses' filing, which includes what the complaint says are excerpts from Tollin's personnel file...

Since when did personnel files become public? What is with these Pouls people? Can't they move someplace else? Oy vey

I wouldn't want to be on the board at Baldwin now. If these "complaints" are valid and I had a child with Mrs. Tollin, I'd sue the hell out of Baldwin. Which makes me wonder - why aren't the Poul's suing Baldwin for knowingly inflicting said teacher upon their daughter if the school knew for at least 5 years prior how abusive she was?? And why in the world, especially since they are such "concerned parents", would they keep their children there? If Baldwin knew and kept secret about this "abusive" teacher for so many years, how many more "abusive" teachers are still on their staff? Would you trust your child at this place knowing what Baldwin kept hidden for all these years? How can the Pouls sleep at night when they do not know if their daughters are possibly being "abused" by other Baldwin staff members? Would you allow your children to remain there?? Won't their daughter continue to suffer post traumatic stress just passing her old classroom? Can therapy even help if she is continually subjected to the memories and horror? If all their allegations about this teacher are true, it sure makes me wonder how "wonderful" these parents truly are.

IFthese complaints had any validity, why would a teacher have taught at a school for like 2 decades? This is all about the Nouveau Main Line and money doesn't know who owns it.

Baldwin paid dearly for it's new gym: they have a scandal that will haunt them forever, and a still somewhat broken relationship with the neighbors arounf the school. Hope the POuls Palace is worth it when it is built and hulks over the residential neighborhood.

The only person anyone should feel sorry for is that teacher. She, as an educator, deserved better. This is a sad commentary on parenting today, only who knew helicopter parenting began quite so young.

So what if this kid hates another teacher down the road? Are the parents going to domate a new library and fire more teachers?

This witch hunt hurts schools everywhere. And it is doubtful this is the only time something like this has happened. Baldwin just got outed is all.

This witch hunt also hurts our beautiful area. It demonstrates once again how awful the Nouveau Main Line is.
