Lockdown follows late-night dance

A gunman marred a social tradition and put a college campus on alert yesterday morning when he fired numerous shots amid a crowd of people dispersing from a dance at Villanova University.
For years, the university has offered students alternative weekend activities to alcohol consumption under a program called Late Nite. The program, which runs from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, hosts comedians, bands and dances, and has gone off without a hitch since its inception - until yesterday.
As a Late Nite dance was letting out from the university's student-activities building, the Connelly Center, fights broke out, according to Liz Kennedy Walsh, associate vice president of university communications.
Shortly before 2:30 a.m., a young man in the school's main parking lot, at Lancaster and South Ithan avenues, raised a handgun above his head and fired three to six shots into the air, Radnor Township police said

No Charges in Villanova Univ. Rape Case; Watchdog Group Monitoring School's Response
by KYW's David Madden
Even as the woman at the heart of the Villanova University rape case says she doesn't want to press charges, a local group that keeps track of crime committed on college campuses is taking a long, hard look at how the university handled the case, which led to three prospective student athletes having their admissions revoked (see related story).
Radnor Township, Pa. police say the woman who made rape allegations against three football players on the Villanova campus doesn't want charges pressed.
In a printed statement issued Thursday afternoon, Radnor police superintendent John Rutty says investigators believe the woman is convinced a rape had, in fact, occurred in a campus dorm room in the early hours of July 15th.
But, the release says, ”She also made it clear to investigators that at this time she is not interested in the Radnor Police Department continuing any investigation in the pursuit of filing charges against the alleged perpetrators.”
Rutty is quoted as saying that the department will “respect the victim’s right to make an informed, conscious decision as to their continued involvement.”
And lest we forget, the latest in a disturbing series of incidents at Cabrini:

The stabbing happened outside of a campus dorm in a courtyard area. Sergeant Joseph Pinto of the Radnor Township police department says when they arrived on the scene they found one male student with a stab wound to the abdomen.

To the mother of Rupert Tate,
Just wondering what was running through your mind when you talked to the Delco Times openly about your son and his impending criminal charges?
"He hangs around with all white kids. That, to me, is his downfall," you, the mother of Rupert Tate, suspect in the Cabrini stabbing, said. "He hangs around with rich white kids who get away with everything," you said.
Your son was surrendering himself to the police for stabbing someone, but according to you, it wasn't his fault; it was the rich white kids who go to Cabrini's fault. Why in a time of sadness and despair, would racial statements be made?
You believed that the only reason your son was surrendering to the police was because of racial bias. Were you that upset and weren't thinking straight when you made those statements?
Ok, so we have covered these issues on college campuses, and we'll ask again in more generalist terms: Who are these institutions of higher learning admitting these days?
As adults, we are all too familiar with the thoroughness of backround checks with regard to things like teaching, adoption, healthcare, etc. But how do colleges check out college students? Is it just academic worthiness, or do they do background checks and thorough psychological exams? And maybe psychological exams should be a more regular thing even for existing students?
And are these colleges disclosing all incidents in a timely fashion? For example, last year or whatever when the Harcum dorm was raided because the kids were suspected bank robbers, the story ended there. Did anyone every report what happened? If these students came back to school, etc?
So now there is another issue at Harcum. Over the weekend, Villanova again. And in between all the issues at Cabrini.
Who are colleges admitting to school and what should change?
