Eclectic works by area artists on display at Villanova
Mainly Art
By Marie Fowler

It's the time of year when we reflect on our blessings. The Community Art Show, on view at the Villanova University Art Gallery through Dec. 6, reminds us that we should be thankful for the artists among us. A Roman Catholic priest, an educator and restaurateur, a family in the tradition of the Philadelphia Peales, and a retired oil refinery worker combine to show us their artistic visions. This compelling multimedia exhibition features the work of The Rev. Richard G. Cannuli (O.S.A.), Dr. E-ni Foo, the Muldowney Family, and Van Buren N. Payne....Foo brings a Fauvist palette and contemporary sensibility to classical Chinese subject matter. A scholar surveys mountains and a lake from his study, a marketplace bustles with frenzied activity, and elders rest quietly on a park bench. Even the artist's chop, the customary way of signing a painting, has been modernized.

Foo's hues are high-keyed, almost day-glo, while his brush-strokes vary from pointillist-like dots to rippling, squiggly riots of pure pigment. Cherry blossoms are rendered in fluffy, cotton-candy pink. Coincidentally, the brushstrokes in the painting with the water buffalo mimic the pattern in the gallery rug.

In his "other" life, Foo, a Princeton Ph.D., heads Asia Learning, Inc., a concern promoting educational exchanges between the United States and China. Additionally, he and his wife own the Hunan Restaurant in Ardmore.
