Bryn Mawr Train Station
|
Have you ever walked to the Bryn Mawr train station? The walk is especially difficult during rush hour. One day while crossing Lancaster Avenue at Morris Avenue I was nearly hit. I was walking during a green light and within the crosswalk. The young girl that nearly hit me was talking on the phone. I waved at her to get her attention and instead of stopping or slowing, she waved at me like I was her friend saying hello. Bookmark/Search this post with: |

I found that flailing my arms at them and looking pissed off gets their attention better.
And we have the same traffic problems here in Ardmore, too. Trying to cross Anderson Ave. in the morning is almost always a problem.

permalinkDoug is correct - the only pedestrtians possibly paid attention to on occasion are aggressive pedestrians - yep - you have to make the drivers look at you, wave your arms, and even YELL. It sucks.
Of course, it would help if the police had enough manpower to police pedestrian crossing areas - even if in Bryn Mawr (as an example) it were only at the intersection of Bryn Mawr Ave and Lancaster or in front of the Bryn Mawr Film institute...In Ardmore, take your pick, no one stops for pedestrians even in front of police, no one give a hoot about pedestrians.
Wanna know how bad our drivers are 'round these thar parts? Look at this photo:
And these remind us of why people SHOULD stop but don't:
We could go on and on and on about how unfriendly this area is to pedestrians. Better enforcement would help, but it's not all that - part of our pedestrian unfriendly atmosphere stems from the arrogance and "me firstness" of a lot of the people behind the wheel...they are all so important they can just run us over..and we also can't forget those fools who persist in jay walking:

permalinkYep, i can attest to the attitude. I had a couple of occasions in the last ten years when making a left off of Lancaster, while trapped in the middle of an intersection and attempting to just get out of the way for the changing light, on-coming drivers would yell at me cause they couldn't run through the RED light.
By the way, the picture of the cop riding the sidewalk - this is like a juxtaposition of the jay-walking issue. It is illegal for bikes to ride on the side walk. That said, I'm not riding my bike on Lancaster either - I'll take the ticket over death any day!!!
I've seen a lot of bikers ride Lancaster in the right lane and I've never been able to figure out if it is shear chutzpah or shear stupidity.
