Today is February 29, 2008 - a day some say doesn't really exist. Before we share a press release that makes us curious, let's share a little bit about Leap Year:

Today in History - Feb. 29
The Associated Press

Today is Friday, Feb. 29, the 60th day of 2008. There are 306 days left in the year. This is Leap Day.

Today's Highlight in History:

On Feb. 29, 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson's National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders (also known as the Kerner Commission) warned that racism was causing America to move "toward two societies, one black, one white , separate and unequal."

On this date:

In 1504, Christopher Columbus, stranded in Jamaica during his fourth voyage to the West, used a correctly predicted lunar eclipse to frighten hostile natives into providing food for his crew.

....In 1940, "Gone with the Wind" won eight Academy Awards, including best picture of 1939.

In 1956, President Eisenhower announced he would seek a second term of office.

In 1960, the first Playboy Club, featuring waitresses clad in "bunny" outfits, opened in Chicago.

Seattle Times: What jumps out about Leap Year-Where to leap

The town of Anthony, which straddles Texas and New Mexico, is the official Leap Year Capital of the World. Mary Ann Brown, a resident of Anthony whose birthday is Feb. 29, persuaded the governors of both states to declare it so in 1988. This year's Leap Year Capital of the World Festival, which includes a golf tournament and an optional trip to nearby Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino, began Thursday and runs through Sunday. Leap days, technically known as intercalary days, are calendar corrections. Despite what you have been taught, there are not 365 days in a year. There are precisely 365.2425 days, which means we gain a day every four years. An exception: Century years cannot be leap years unless they are evenly divisible by 400.

Inventor of Leap Day

In 45 B.C., Emperor Julius Caesar added a Leap Day occurring every four years to the calendar he created. Until then, calendars were a mess.

Now, onto the amusing local leap year press release. Is Radnor seceding from Delaware County? A press release issued a short time ago from The Radnor Republican Party indicates that they are going against the rest of Delaware County and Montgomery County and nominating their own candidate for state senate. So Daylin, how's that bowl of popcorn? May we join you to watch this latest installment of "How the Republicans Turn"?

Honestly, we can't make this stuff up, we can only sit back and watch the fur fly. Here is an excerpt of the press release. It is from Mimi Auchincloss, and we assume it is a follow up from a Jan 22, 2008 article where she said (and we quote from the article):

Mimi Auchincloss, chair of the Republican Party of Radnor, said that committee has not yet met to endorse a candidate for the state Senate seat.

But she called Paolino "a personal friend" and said, "It would be wonderful to have someone from Radnor in a higher office."

Auchincloss said that the committee will hold an endorsement meeting in the future.

Ok, so give this Mimi person credit for standing by her pal no matter how strange this makes an already odd primary race:

Radnor -- The Radnor Township Republican Committee last night unanimously endorsed Lisa Paolino for the Pennsylvania State Senate.

“Lisa Paolino has a record of accomplishment as a Commissioner in Radnor Township 5th ward,” said Mimi Auchincloss, Chair of the Radnor GOP. “She has the experience, background and strength of character for the Senate, and will be a great
addition. She is a superb choice for the Republican Party.”

In 1999, Paolino was the first woman in Radnor history elected to a full four-year term as Commissioner; she has served as Vice-President of the Board since 2003.....As a Commissioner, Paolino has worked to hold the line on taxes. She has worked to acquire more than 50 acres of open space and is a liaison with the Radnor Conservancy, working to secure open space on one of the largest remaining parcels of farmland in the area.

Paolino completed two notable projects with Penn DOT, including the sound barrier retrofit along Rte. 476 and the award winning Radnor Rails
to Trails Project.
