State Sen. Connie Williams may have changed her position on a particular eminent domain bill, but she told Ardmore residents at a town hall meeting last week that she does not favor taking and demolition of properties to revitalize Ardmore's downtown.
"The use [of eminent domain] in Ardmore, if they [township commissioners] do it, is not good," she told an audience of about 40 at the Senior Citizens Center of Ardmore Nov. 22. Williams (D-17th) also said, in response to a question, she does not agree Ardmore is "blighted."
"We have some vacant stores. [The town] needs some investment, but it is not blighted," she said. Tightening and clarifying the definition of blight - the means by which local governments like Lower Merion declare areas in need of redevelopment - is one of the issues that legitimately needs to be addressed in new state eminent domain legislation, Williams added.
