Where do we go from here?
|
Dear Friends, By now you have received the meeting notice from Sharon Eckstein, President of The Save Ardmore Coalition. I thought it important to note that this is not intended to be a monster meeting, but it is intended to set a footprint for the future. As Sharon said "Where do we go from here?" To that end, the reality is we are going to have redevelopment. Some people are ok with that some are not. But it IS going to happen, so as a community, we need to remember that. As a community we need to move forward towards the Ardmore of tomorrow. YOUR participation, as interested citizens and residents is crucial to the process. You need to be an advocate for the kind of positive change you want to see. Because no plans are set in stone at this point, how the redevelopment occurs and what it will look like in the end is something we can all as a COMMUNITY have an impact on. How can we extract as many community positives as possible? I am giving all of you a homework assignment if you are planning to attend our meeting. I am suggesting this in the effort to save time and assist in an orderly meeting process: I want all of you who come to this meeting to take the time PRIOR to the meeting to type up or write down what YOU love best about Ardmore. What are the top 3 things you wish to see accomplished in redevelopment? If you have specific areas of concern, write that down and again, be precise as to physical locations if that is applicable in your comments. If you as a community member have a specific type of business you would like to see in Ardmore, now is the time to mention those things. What is YOUR ideal plan for the future? The township has chosen a developer, if you could have five minutes with him, what would you like him to know and why? This is not intended to be a dissertation, so I am including a word maximum: 500 words or less. You do not need to sign your name to the homework assignment unless you have a desire to possibly be contacted about your thoughts. In that case, be sure to include your name, phone number, street address and e-mail address. Please understand that I am not saying we will discuss at THIS meeting every thing you write down - I am not. Again, this meeting is to open a new dialog as to where do we go now as a community. SAC is part of the community, but your voices must be heard as well. What is past is past, we should focus on the future. Your written feedback will give our board something to digest and go over. Hope to see you Thursday April 3rd, 2008 at 7 PM at the Hunan Restaurant, 2nd floor. Feel free to bring a friend or interested neighbor. Since as we all know that government, media, and developers alike read the SAC site, here is some of the first feedback we have received from Carla's homework assignment as a follow-up to Sharon's meeting notice:

permalinkI could not agree more with the person above. I moved here two months ago from Washington D.C. as well and found both downtown Ardmore and Bryn Mawr to be pretty disgraceful. It is completely run down, filled with tacky nail salons and other retailers, not to mention completely dilapidated buildings. I really can't tell that part of Lancaster Ave from the part east of city ave. Washington has many vibrant neighborhood developments with new shops, restaurants, etc. I completely agree that what lower merion does not need is redevelopment that brings nothing but chains, like those found in Silver Spring. That being said anything is better then the disgrace that currently surrounds downtown Ardmore and Bryn Mawr. Coming from Washington I have no idea how those of you who live around were not embarrassed by this area. All the money in this area and this is the best you can do, nail salons, run down buildings that look like they could collapse at any moment. Seriously you could blind fold me, drop at the corner of cricket ave and lancaster and I would swear I was in west philly.

permalinkAfter reading Mike Weilbacher's column in the MLT today, I have to say I fully agree with him in regards to the use of Shauffele Plaza.
We need a communtity performing arts space/ or a movie theater.
I also appreciate the "fresh eyes" of the comment above. It reinforces at least to me that we need more than tinkering and that we need some significant changes.
