Is The First Amendment only for a Select Few?

We wish to point out an article in the News of Delaware County - Haverford Township Edition (Volume 73, Number 21 Wednesday April 23 - April 29, 2008). There is an article not online we'd like to quote from:

Campaign shenanigans cause primary disruption by Rosalie Pressman, Staff Writer

...Flaps concerning Lisa Paolino's campaign material for the 17th Pennsylvania Senate seat required court intervention in the days leading up to the election...."In my opinion, they took away my first amendment rights," Paolino said. "It's arbitrary what they believe is acceptable"

Hmmmmm....what were those judges names? Delaware County Judge Joseph Cronin and Montgomery County Judge Richard J. Hodgson? Those judges don't know their jobs? Interesting.

And then there is the issue of the car wash coupons? One little phone call to the Attorney General's office doesn't make them investigate, does it?

What's that thing you hear on Law and Order? "Cause"? How will that wrinkle end up? We have no idea, and only time will tell....BUT we will note that other blogs are discussing this enough that we don't really have to. But what other blogs are not discussing is Ms. Paolino's interesting interpretation of the First Amendment. Are we to construe that it's ok for her just not o.k. for others? Why is it that Doug Muth got a threatening e-mail from a lawyer on her behalf over a First Amendment Rights issue? How is it that a dirty old campaign trick when it comes to fake ballots can be construed as expression of First Amendment Rights and this is not? Did anyone out there say she wasn't entitled to her First Amendment rights as she whined and whined on her blob? As her pals whined and whined on websites like Tony Phyrillas, GrassRootsPA, and even way back when on WriteMarsh (which has gone quiet on the topic)?

The answer is NO. Everyone knew that as silly as it all sounded, it was their right to say how they felt. But can the same be said if someone disagrees with her position? Take for example a post on a neighboring blog called "Blogging in General". What prompted that?

Well, that's all we have to say on that for the time being, although we keep reading article after published article proclaiming Lance Rogers and Daylin Leach as the general election candidates for State Senate in the 17th Senate District, yet we have NOT read anywhere in any article to date that Ms. Paolino has conceded the race even though we heard she did so last evening and why is that? Why does Ms. Paolino persist she was a "victim"? Wasn't she the one who said she could run and win? Can it be considered if she had run a clean race without shenanigans we all wouldn't have had quite so many conversations on this topic right?

Ms. Paolino, voters sent you a clear message as to the type of change they are comfortable with. Next they will choose between Lance and Daylin. We believe this will be a truly different race. It will be issues based in the true sense of the word.

What will Radnor do now? How do they feel now about Ms. Paolino? Well, can it be said the gentle chiding from the Suburan and Wayne Times editorial page speaks volumes?

Sample ballots deceiving, whether meant to be or not
By Sam Strike

As I was sitting on an uncomfortable bench in a stately courtroom in the Delaware County Courthouse Saturday, the natural light streaming in shone on me to confirm what I have always thought: politics is a dirty game wherein citizens are sure to lose.

An emergency hearing had been called over a green-colored sample ballot being distributed by the campaign of Lisa Paolino, a Radnor Township commissioner who ran for state Senate in this, the 17th District.

Opponent Lance Rogers had argued that he was the de facto endorsed Republican candidate in the County of Delaware, and that Paolino’s literature had been misleading and had not indicated that fact.....(The judge eventually granted a preliminary injunction prohibiting Paolino from further distributing the sample ballots.).....I was speaking to a woman, a registered Republican in Radnor Township, who was telling me she didn’t see a reason to vote because there were no candidates to choose from. I was perplexed because that simply wasn’t true.

I asked her why she thought that, and she said she had received something in the mail that had listed one option for each choice.

“Was it green?” I asked her.

“Yes,” she responded, surprised that I knew that.

I then informed her that the paper she received was a list of people that one particular candidate wants her and other Republicans to vote for. I asked if she had seen the miniscule “Paid for by …” at the bottom of the literature.

“No,” she said.

“Can you bring me the sample ballot?” I asked.

Well, she had thrown it away. And, in anger over what she perceived as being duped, tossed away any thoughts of voting for the candidate who sent out that piece of campaign “literature.”.....

What will be the next race attempt for this person? Delaware County Council or State Rep or just staying commissioner? Only time will tell...on a lot of things. Hopefully, we're signing off this particular topic of political shenanigans for a while....but if something makes it relevant again...well then, we'll be back.
