Newtown Square 13th Annual Colonial Day
Saturday, June 7th 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Newtown Square's Annual Colonial Day Celebration will be held on the 1st Saturday in June.
Colonial Day is a one day celebration (rain date Sunday, June 8th) that is filled with a number of events including tours of historic sites and private properties, colonial artisans and crafters, displays, lunch and concert activities. You will see signs of Colonial Life all over the township. Children are invited to bring their Delaware County Historical Passport for this trip into the past. Public Buildings and Sites that will be open, include:
The Paper Mill House Museum (1770)
The Friends Meeting House (c. 1711 and 1791)
The Hood Octagonal School House (1798)
The Square Tavern (1742)
Bartram's Covered Bridge (1860)
PRR Freight Station/ Railroad Museum @ Drexel Lodge (1895)
In addition, the Thomas Massey House (1696) in Broomall will be open , by the Marple
Historical Society, in conjunction with the Newtown Square event. There will be a raffle ($5 per ticket) with the prize of dinner for 8 people at Historic Massey House.
The private homes tour includes, for the first time, the *1761 Waterloo House,
where some of Washington’s soldiers stopped to rest. Also included will be the
Samual Caley and the Beatty House.
If you haven’t visited the Paper Mill House Museum lately, don’t miss seeing the many changes including new displays. Children love to visit the General store to see what products were available in colonial times. They also are fascinated by the displays of Arrowheads and Rocks. A short trip to the Square Tavern will find Clarisa Dillon demonstrating cooking, and always willing to answer questions. We all enjoy Carol Schaeffer’s art work; and treasure her paintings of historic sites of our area. Carol’s exhibit will be just outside the Tavern.
Save that $4.00/gallon gas and stay home to travel a few hundred years back into our
Colonial past. See you back in the past on June 7th!
