Feds, local cops bust Swan Day Spa brothel
Suspects are accused of trying to force two immigrants into prostitution
By Jennifer Miller

You know, when the article was posted about the Berwyn Brothel Bust (the now sayonara-d Swan "Day Spa" where lunch time snacks apparently had a whole new meaning), I had absolutely NO IDEA that this one post wold generate so many comments about a purported "spa" close to Ardmore?

Well, naïve me! I am, in a word, disgusted. Disgusted that this could be in a community where people pay so much friggin' money to live! Disgusted that business owners near this other "spa" don't work a little harder to get rid of this and why is that? Has no one contacted the property owner? Why has this spa been "known" for years and never cleaned up? Real services are fine, after all who doesn't love a legitimate massage and spa treatment? But illegal acts? Gross. Who knows what other party favors the patrons might bring home with them? Like STDs? Ewwww. Does this place have an interesting client list if it is like the energizer bunny and keeps on going? Or is it on the up and up and what is on perverse message boards and websites is a big fib? What is fact and what is fiction? If this "spa" is on the up and up why do they answer the phone kind of later into the evening ? Do they have late hours or something?

But of course, places like this exist because people patronize them. Not to be the morality moron here, but surely we don't need this stuff around here, do we?

I want to give Lower Merion Township the benefit of the doubt. Maybe now that media attention has cast a spotlight on this topic, if there is a problem close to Ardmore, it can be taken care of?

All I know is I am totally skeeved out. Someone said to me "what you have never seen the ads on Craig's List?"

Well, no, actually I haven't....until today. Check out a nasty category called philadelphia craigslist > therapeutic services. It's enough to make you give up the Internet.

And not to be too sarcastic, but I found an ad with the same phone number that repeats multiple times, and this little vixen (or old vixen?) claims she's all about the Main Line?

It's time to take back our communities. Seriously, this is not cool. Not cool at all.

So what would you think if you saw these?

Looks like there is another elephant in the room. First we have the silence on Daly leaving, and now all the LM commissioners were at the Wednesday police committee meeting which reported out on crime in Lower Merion by Daly. Not a peep during the happy proceeding regarding Lower Merion's pride and joy - Kobe "I'm not really a brothel and I don't exist" Spa.

LOL, even if they should address the issue of this "spa", do you think any government body is going to discuss this on TV? To be replayed over and over as is the case with Channel 7? By the way, I had to pick up a dessert and some stuff at Whole Foods in Wynnewood earlier today and I swear I saw this spa now over there, so is it possible they moved?

I just drove by it at 5 E. Wynnewood three days ago, so if it moved it moved awful quickly.

Some more from Spa Hunters. I can't help but think of human trafficking with the "young providers". How sad.

Ok the sad truth of it is that if there is something like trafficking going on, the only way it will get dealt with is if they complain - after all if you read the reports on the Berwyn place, etc. that is how they got caught: the girls who worked there complained. I doubt the township likes this "dirty laundry" being aired, so we had better stick to the facts and leave supposition alone, ok? And along those lines a couple of people I know a couple years back thought they would call for a massage (thought it was like Toppers or 3000 BC in Wayne). When they got there to Wynnewood road they had to be buzzed in like they were going into a jewelry store (or pawn shop), and the woman that greeted them had a cigarette hanging out of her mouth. The place so skeeved them out they didn't even give their names, just turned around and bolted. But again, places like this stay open because people patronize them as much as anything else. I for one would like to know their business hours ?

Kobe is open 9am-11pm 7 days a week. And, I think it is unusual (and fortunate) that the two women in Berwyn complained. From what I have read on the net, most of these woman are terrified and they are told that if they go to the authorities they will be deported and their families back home or in the U.S. will be harmed. They are young and they don't speak any English in a strange country with a strange culture. Sorry, but I feel sorry for them. It is tragic.

I'm not about to put all the blame on human slaves and nearby businesses and the patrons. Yes, these young women who don't speak any English could possibly be there of their own free will, but two places like this in Exton that were busted six months ago involved human trafficking and the one in Berwyn involved human trafficking. From what I have read on these "spa" forums, they rotate these young woman from spa to spa across the country while they pay off their debt to get to the land of opportunity. If that does not ring organized crime alarm bells, I don't know what does.

And I am not going to cut the township a break. This place has been there for more than a decade. How could the police have not known about it? I know for a fact they have known about it for several years now due to a concerned citizen.

This is what gets me about the latest police committee meeting. It was as if nothing happened on this forum to make this public and everything was just great in the township. I am told by a very reliable source that someone at the committee meetings saw two members of the police committee huddled down the hall talking to each other after the police committee meeting while all the other commissioners were still in the meeting room hearing the other committees. This tells me they know about this from this site and are planning damage control instead of accountability.

So, why not some re-assurance to the community? Why not show through their words they are displeased with the police as opposed to being all smiles at the police committe meeting from what I was told? Why not re-assure the community by saying (without mentioning Kobe) that some information has been made public about crime in Lower Merion and eveything is being done to put a stop to this?

This is what annoys me about the township. They can do no wrong and will admit no wrong. A few months back a cop verbally assaulted and physically terrified a 72 year old grandmother with violent actions in Gladwyne because she did not understand his hand signals at an accident scene. She called the police and asked for an apology and was told she would never get one. Who knows what if anything happened to this cop who appears to be a loose cannon? Citizens have been complaining about another cop and get silence.

I am personally sick and tired of the township never being able to do no wrong and always getting a free ride while citizens are always held accountable if they do something wrong. That's not what government is supposed to be about in this country.

The commissioners should be furious with Daly for allowing this place to operate for over a decade. Other commissioners should be furious with the police committee while demanding to know what is being done. Instead all that happens is the appearance by the commissioners that eveything is AOK by how smooth and happy I hear the latest police committee meeting went.

I just don't buy this blame the 20 year old prostitutes, blame the customers, blame the businesses nearby (even though they all have accountability) while leaving no accountability towards the township when several commissioners have stated their job is to protect the heath and welfare of citizens. I also don't buy that they have tried their best. This whorehouse has been less than a mile from the police station for over a decade.

And if anyone doubts what this place is from the internet posts describing sex acts for money above, why would Kobe have been placing this ad next to ads for prostitutes in the "adult services" section of City Paper and other free weeklies for at least the past five years? Click a recent City Paper ad for Kobe "Spa" here (may take a few seconds to upload as it is a free hosting site)

Those hours are pretty strange....legitimate spas and even ones which offer physical therapy don't have such extensive hours.

As to the rest of it, o.k., o.k. points taken. Government could be a little more citzen friendly. And I don't like the idea of a 72 year old gandmother being intimidated at an accident scene, but is it possible it was just the heat of a moment in trying to keep a scene clear? And has this grandmother contacted any commissioners that have Gladwyne in their districts or the local papers? How do you know about this incident? Are you a family friend of this woman's? Good government starts at the top, yes, but Supt. Daly is accountable to that top, and I happen to think all in all he has done a good job in his long tenure. And further and to the point, let's not cop bash if we can help it ok? Being a cop or a fireman is no easy job, and I think we need to tread carefully.

I think the majority of L.M. cops are professional, good cops. I just don't think L.M. government has enough transparancy when it comes to complaints about the government.

As for this elderly woman, she is the mother of a friend of Proleteia, who is also a friend of mine. When Proleteia complained to all the commissioners Jenny Brown did respond and asked how she could help. The other commissioner from Gladwyne did not respond.

Unfortunately, this elderly woman decided she did not want to pursue it further as she feared retribution.
