UPDATE!!!! Just got a call from a reporter I know. News conference imminent at Lower Merion - they found the car, they found the woman. And I hear she lives not so far from accident scens as I surmised. No other details available.

Child struck by car in Bryn Mawr
Published: Wednesday, July 15, 2009
By Rich Ilgenfritz

Ok, can we stop for a minute and talk about this? We can go back to fighting about politics later. There is a kid, someone's KID in a trauma unit fighting for his life. Why? Because some ignorant female hit a kid, and took off in Bryn Mawr on New Gulph Road, near Morris Avenue and Baldwin. What kind of coward does this?

Dear Neighbors,

The Lower Merion police informed me about a very distressing incident today. At about 12:15pm today, a 13 year old bicyclist was struck by a passing car on New Gulph Road just west of Morris Avenue in Bryn Mawr. The child was transported to CHOP where he is listed in critical condition with injuries to his head and lower extremities. The child was not wearing a helmet.

The driver of the car failed to stop at the scene. The Lower Merion Police Department is requesting assistance with locating the suspect vehicle. The driver is described as a white female between 30 and 40 years of age, driving a tan station wagon, possibly a Volvo, with damage to the windshield and right side of the car. Please contact the Lower Merion Police at 610-649-1000 with any information.

Thank you,

Scott

So look at the fragility of life, and blog, twitter, facebook, e-mail, whatever. If you know who this driver is, get them to turn themselves in. Or call the police. This is someone's kid.

And all you self-important SOBs who think it's OK to speed through our neighborhoods all over the Main Line, look what happened!

I am disgusted and upset.

Of course, where this kid was hit has been a problem area for years...not that there aren't many of those around here because everyone is in such a freaking hurry. SLOW DOWN.

I am so tired of the drivers around here. Who the hell plows into a kid and keeps on going? Probably the same people that don't stop for pedestrians in crosswalks.

It's not just there. Another problem area is the parking lot at Anderson and Montgomery Ave in Ardmore.

I walk through this lot every morning on the way to my train. And without fail, a couple of times a week, some jerk will think it's okay to turn in from Montgomery Ave. and cut through the parking lot at a fairly high rate of speed, all in order to get a Anderson Ave just a little quicker. This is especially troublesome for me, as these cars usually come up *behind* me.

I feel like a dork looking over my shoulder when walking through that lot, but it's the only way to walk through that lot safely.

So sorry to hear about this.

If the driver had short, black hair, I know of a female in that age range who has a tan Volvo wagon who drives around the area - and can get distracted because she is driving other people's dogs around as she is a dog walker/pet sitter.

Thanks Doug for promoting this. I spent part of my growing up time on New Gulph Road. This problem is NOT new. My parents used to complain about it. It was one of the first things I ever complained about in my whole life because I used to have near misses even getting the mail out of the mailbox, let alone dragging the trash cans up the driveway. Charlie Bloom knew about this problem and before him, Howard West. New Gulph is a cut through to King of Prussia. Trucks, buses, whomever peel off Montgomery aand fly down the one way block, usually barely stopping at the stop sign at either the Redeemer stop sign -Pennswood AND Fishers.

Last night at Main Line Mags Top 100 I found out HOW diverse this website's readership now is. (Even had a conversation with Joe Manko and we both lived :<}). Anyway. I hope this driver comes forward.

I used to bike through that intersection a few times a week on my way to class. It really is harrowing.

I'd like to point out that this is one of the few direct bike routes for students from Narberth and Penn Valley who are newly redistricted to Harriton High School. The township has a clear responsibility to make sure that absolutely safe walking and biking routes exist for students in what is overall a very inaccessible area of the township.

Here is a photo taken LAST week when they were re-painting lines and pedestrian crossing lines on Montgomery Ave across and near the Merion Cricket Club. The cones were squashed the day I took the photos by typical Main Line I'm-So-Self-Important-Get-Out-of My-Way or I'm-on-the-crackberry drivers. This morning at Grays Lane and Montgomery at the light at the NEW pedestrian crossing signal two folks who live in the 429 Apartments could not cross Montgomery at the light because of some woman on a cell phone in a blue Toyota SUV who was 100% blocking the pedestrian crosswalk. People BEHIND her backed up so she could back up and let pedestrians across but she refused.

So I have heard that Baldwin has NOT done their green benches?

Well, first of all, how long has that darn gym been open?

When developers or institutions get approved for plans to develop or grow their footprint and people ask for sidewalks and they balk, a compromise can be found in "green benches" - which would be a level path around the property perimeter - not necesarily paved, although they could be small gravel or a mulch path (think Nature Trail at Haveford College). So this was a condition of approval for their Monster Gym. I can't recall seeing the path put in place, so I have been asking around. So far the response has been "no".
See old photo below - the left side is where the green benches should be (somewhere near where the construction entrance sign is) - and these paths should have wrapped from New Gulph all the way around Morris Avenue up to I think Montgomery and the main gates of Baldwin):

Baldwin had a grand opening in October or November, so I assume that was when the building was officially open.

Rumor has it, Baldwin's major donor (Poulis (sp))after getting the school into a lawsuit, did not pay the balance of money his family had pledged. That coupled with a bad economy has left Baldwin with less money to complete its plans.

This doesn't excuse their noncompliance, but may in fact explain it.

And oh by the way Chris Leswing from Lower Merion says that Baldwin has or is completing their green benches now. I didn't notice...and I am a walker...whatever. I say this case right now is exactly why the commissioners should put sidewalks in on this block of New Gulph Road. They can spend 8 million on Ludington Library? What price human life, Lower Merion?
