Kathleen Kane is an experienced prosecutor who has prosecuted rapists and who is INDEPENDENT of the leadership of both parties.

Kathleen Kane Indepedent of the Leadership of both Parties, a prosecutor not a politician

Patrick Murphy served in Iraq in Judge Advocate General's Corp. We thank him for his service in Iraq against the enemies of American Freedom. This is no small thing.

Team Obama's Patrick Murphy for Attorney General website

Patrick Murphy seems to look at the office of Attorney General as an opportunity for higher office or other personal benefit which compromises and politicizes his prosecutorial discretion. Patrick Murphy is endorsed and inextricably entwined with Democratic Party Establishment; Patrick Murphy is NOT INDEPENDENT of party leadership which further compromises his prosecutorial judgment.

Compromised and conflicted Harrisburg Insider Republican AG candidate Dave Freed

The Republican Candidate Dave Freed is compromised and conflicted because of his close familial, financial and political ties to his father-in-law, his children's grandfather, former Republican Attorney General LeRoy Zimmerman, and someone under investigation by the Attorney General's office, the very office his political protégé, Dave Freed, is seeking. Republican Dave Freed's prosecutorial judgment must be considered compromised because of his lack of independence from both is his political and financial mentor, LeRoy Zimmerman, as well as his lack of independence from the BrabenderCoxBrianNuttTomCorbett Insider Network.

There remains open the Senate Bonusgate investigation as well as questions about the 9 year delay between the rape of a ten year old, witnessed by a credible witness, and indictment and arrest. LeRoy Zimmerman, legally, enriched himself, like so many other Harrisburg Establishment Insiders, at the expense of the Hershey Trust as the Inquirer's reporter Bob Fernandez and others have written about Read More at The Liberty Blog

As liberal Democrat Inquirer Karen Heller, a columnist and not a reporter, accurately points out, (Inquirer March 25, 2012)  Kathleen Kane is independent and experienced and better funded than Patrick Murphy. Not mentioned is former Democratic President Bill Clinton's endorsement, no small thing.

Given the highly charged political issues of Senate Bonusgate, Sandusky Child Rape and Molestation Case, and LeRoy Zimmerman, independence is, to my view, the most distinguishing and important difference between the very qualified Kathleen Kane and all the other two candidates.

Analyzing the candidates as objectively as I can, I have to conclude that Kathleen Kane will be the choice of independent voters in November so I hope Democratic primary voters choose Kathleen Kane as their nominee. It is time for a Democrat independent of the Republican controlled Senate, Republican controlled House, the Republican Governor and independent of the Unions to be Pennsylvania's Chief Law Enforcement Officer.

Karen Heller has written a perceptive column. I would only quibble that Gov. Corbett is not what I, and many others, would consider "conservative" and I would not emphasize "female" because polling profile is that that women are weak on law enforcement. Knowing many Republican women, including the Sheriff of Montgomery County and the DA of Montgomery County, this is far from true but it also a statistical fact.

Independence and competence! Kathleen Kane, a prosecutor, not a politician, is what compels me to support this candidate.

I have yet to look into these candidates and perhaps Kane is a good option, but I disagree with the statement that just because she is a prosecutor she is not a politician. Just look at Montco DA Risa Ferman.

Everything she does is politically calculated. Ferman is the consummate insider and politician as a prosecutor. Now perhaps Kane does not operate that way, but you can't say prosecutors are not politicians.

They have to run for office, after all. What they do once in office is another story, but most prosecutors tend to be highly political (even though they are not supposed to be) in my view.

That being said, I like Kane's YouTube on her website and if she is true to her word, she looks like a good candidate for AG.

You said twice she is "not a politician".

I made my point that by nature prosecutors are political animals. On top of that, running for DA or AG certainly involves politics.

If Kane is not a typical politician but truly a public servant, she is a rare bird indeed and would get my support over an establishment type like Murphy. I actually liked Murphy when he first ran for Congress, but D.C. and party politics quickly morphed into a self-serving individual.

The Attorney General enforces the law, not makes the law. That is the job of legislator. Discussions of validity or wisdom of a law are irrelevant to the office. Who will better prosecute the law, with “equal justice under law,” that is, put the bad guys in jail and hold criminal wrongdoers accountable.

I agree with this and never said anything that would be counter to it.

However, I think most would agree there is ample evidence Corbett was highly political as AG. There is ample evidence that Montco DA Ferman (as well as her prosecutors) determines who she prosecutes and does not prosecute based on who her political allies and friends are.

I'm not saying that is the case with Kane, and I like what I see so far. However, she has also not been fully vetted so I will wait for that until making further determinations on her and other candidates.

Yep. I figured this the moment Matthews was charged and the grand jury became public knowledge.

No doubt the Democratic Committee of Montgomery County was aware one way or the other about the grand jury the moment it started over a year-and-a-half ago.

IMO, the D's did not oppose Republican Ferman so she would go light on Hoeffel as well as Matthews. Republican Castor's true hatred was towards Republican turncoat Matthews, so that is who got the trumped up perjury charges that were dismissed and Democrat Hoeffel was probably not grilled for a perjury trap before the grand jury because the D's did not challenge Ferman and she could keep her hefty campaign contribution war chest intact.

A very big deal for Kathleen Kane  The Democratic Primary is one of the two most important primaries in Pennsylvania on April 24th

President Bill Clinton rallies support for unendorsed Kathleen Kane, independent of Pennsylvania Democratic Party leaderhip.

Former President Bill Clinton will attend a rally Thursday at Upper Moreland High School in support of Kathleen Kane, Democratic candidate for state attorney general. The "Get Out the Vote" event is open to the public on a first-come basis, said officials with the Kane campaign. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the rally runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Philadelphia Inquirer follows Bob's lead at The Liberty Blog and here at Save Ardmore Coaltion site and endorses Kathleen Kane for Attorney General in the 24 April Primary. Kudos to the Inquirer for following the ahed of the curve The Liberty Blog and my SAC blogging. I have been told that the Northwest Independent, in heavily Democratic northwest Philadelphia will also endorse. As far as I know, only politicians have endorsed career politician and Democratic insider, Patrick Murphy.

Experience tilts scale for KaneApril 12, 2012

As I commented to this endosement " Kathleen Kane is independent of party leadership and because she is independently self-financed, and not financed by party insiders getting rich from government and by union leadership, she is candidate most likely to prosecute the law with justice for all.

The Republican is conflicted and compromised and it is hard to think Dave Freed will prosecute his father in law, and his children's grandfather, LeRoy Zimmerman who is under active investigation by the AG's office."

Like I posted, I liked many of Murphy's positions as the Inky article provides and liked that he was not a career politician when he was elected to Congress, but he then became part of the establishment.

Kane has the better experience to be AG and I hope she can remain out of the political aspect of the job and focus on the rights of citizens as opposed to political machinations if she were to be elected AG.

Given how political I thought Corbett was a AG (and as governor he is certainly beholden to special interests), perhaps it is time for a D in that office, but I will vote for who I believe is the best person for the job regardless of party (apparently and independent is also running).

I do like what I see with Kane so far.

This is an interesting post, especially given your emphasis on the candidate's seemingly not being beholden to the back-room party power-brokers.

I realize this election is not here in LW, but what do you -- BobG the thread starter -- think of this candidate, Gene Stlip, running for the D nomination in the grotesquely re-mapped Pennsylvania 11th Congressional District (look it up if unsure)?

Latest write up from the Harrisburg Patriot News: Gene Stilp looks to move from obscure activism to public office in race for 11th Congressional District

Whoever gets the nod for the Ds will presumably be running against Lou "Immigrants are the Cause of all Your Problems" Barletta. Formerly the mayor of Hazleton, PA.

The Bill Clinton event at Upper Moreland was very good. Diane Marseglia, a Bucks County Commissioner, is backing her.

Bill Clinton made the point: Who is more likely to do more good for the millions of people of Pennsylvania than a prosecutor who has experience investigating and trying sexual assault cases on minors, trying murder case to verdict, investigating in prosecutor elder fraud and other fraud and corruption cases. The Penna. AG is very powerful position and can be a force for real law and order.

The Republican candidate is a nightmare and the AG office is vulnerable to Ds because Rs have sold out their own constituents.

Kathleen Kane appears to be the person to sweep out the AG's office. very hot....

Spoke to a friend who is lawyer who is following the AG race rather closely out of professional curiosity.

In just looking at electability (and not knocking or supporting any candidate) she said Freed plays well to the majority of PA voters to be AG as a DA, being conservative and backed by the GOP (not that I like his establishment support) and has the best shot.

Murphy is more of a centrist. He can either appeal to both sides of the aisle or this could be off-putting as trying to have his cake and eat it too.

Kane is considered quite liberal, which will play well in the southeast and parts of Pittsburgh, but make it tough for her in a statewide election. Apparently she has a lot of family money and that is how she is bankrolling her candidacy and the Clinton endorsement is said to be based on campaign contributions her family made. The Clintons are quite liberal and I can see them not liking Murphy and are thus supporting Kane (while the D establishment in PA supports Murphy knowing a moderate D has a better shot than a liberal D in a statewide election).

This lawyer’s view was Murphy would have the best chance of the D’s at beating Freed as a moderate who has the backing of the establishment.

So this lawyer sees a Freed/Murphy match-up with Freed winning. The more conservative, establishment candidate always gets it for AG in PA. However, she offered a caveat. Republican Governor Corbett is not highly liked and was recently AG, so if a D were to win, she sees it as a Corbett backlash more than anything else and this alone means this is the best year a D has ever had to win as AG.

This was not an endorsement of Freed, just an observation that party support is huge in PA and PA is more conservative than not – and especially when it comes to Attorney General. PA has more registered Democrats, but a lot are conservative rural types who could be described as “Reagan Democrats”.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out. I never just vote for the candidate who has the best chance of winning, I don’t blindly follow a party, and I look at all their positions on issues – not just one or two, and still need to learn more about the candidates.

That Kane is a liberal means I will like some of her positions and not others. That Freed is conservative means I will like some of his positions but not others. The way Murphy straddles the fence and how I believe he sold out to the establishment once elected to Congress makes me think he is too political for me.

However, none of this should matter for AG. It should all be about the rule of law and not political persuasion, but that hardly ever is the case with prosecutors/politicians.

So, I like Kane from what I have seen at this point, but more vetting is needed for me to commit. Since I am presently registered Republican due to one specific candidate I can’t vote for Kane or Murphy in the primary (really wish PA had open primaries) and have some time to see this play out.

Dave Freed has considerable conflicts of interest because he is so closely entangled with both Tom Corbett and LeRoy Zimmermann.

Tom Corbett's 9 year delay from the rape of a ten year old, witnessed and reported by a reliable witness, to indictment and arrest needs explaining. Jerry Sandusky presented himself as a child advocate at Second Mile when, in fact, he sexually attacked childeren. Tom Corbett did not effectively investigate and prosecute.

There is also the noninvestigation of Senate Republican Bonusgate. There is a lot of smoke but little investigation and lots of legal fees for the taxpayers by Senate Republicans.

LeRoy Zimmerman not only is under investigation himself, personally, for allegations relating to Hershey Charitable Trust but he also was paid half million dollars by this iconic Pennsylvania institution at expense of disadvantaged kids. Disgraceful.

These are the highpoints. The Republican candidate is highly vulnerable.

As former President Clinton said last night at Upper Moreland High School. Who is more likely to do more good for more Pennsylvanians than any other candidate? Who has the courtroom trial experience as well as administrative experience, who has experience with cases where children wre sexually attacked and who has real world trial experience with fraud cases. AND Kathleeen Kane is independent of party leadership.

politeia's analysis is conventionally shallow and does not, at all, address Dave Freed's considerable negatives.

Bob, this was not my analysis but rather that of a lawyer I know who made some objective, nonpartisan observations on how state politics work.

I do find it interesting how you are supporting a liberal given your stated political positions and past, constant attacks on liberals on these blogs.

I can understand why you don't like Murphy - he did not support the all-out wars in the Middle East.

A cynic would say Kane has a greater chance of beating Murphy in the D primary as a liberal, but a lesser chance of beating R Freed in the general as a liberal than Murphy does as a moderate.

Using that logic, you as a Republican committee person could be trying to set Freed up for a victory.
Are you still a Republican committee person? Have your not given your word to support Republican candidates?

I'm in agreement with you that I don't trust establishment candidates, but that does not mean I will blindly support a non-establishment candidate who goes against my views - say a warmonger, right-wing religious right zealot who flouts civil liberties. That non-establishment candidate would not get my support.

That being said, is your logic that even though Kane is a liberal (and you have really blasted liberals on these blogs over the years) she will supposedly be an impartial AG because she is not "establishment" (though Clinton support seems pretty establishment to me)?

I have stated I like what I see in Kane so far, but your statement that the observations of a lawyer friend of mine on how state politics actually work makes me "conventionally shallow" does not help Kane’s cause - and especially when I wonder about your real motivations.

And, I have no problem questioning your motivations in a cynical manner since you just did it to me on another thread.

You friend's objective, nonpartisan observations were wrong because they omitted any analysis of Dave Freed's serious conflicts of interest. Dave Freed is Tom Corbett's man who will then be in the position to review Tom Corbett's actions as Attorney General. The analysis of your friend whom you quoted with approval is shallow and misses the most salient issue in the AG election: Dave Freed's conflicts of interest.

Therefore there are two other alternatives; one is independent of party leadership and one is entangled with party leadership. Which to choose?

Equal Justice under law means following the evidence; the threat to citizens is that the Attorney General will allow partisan bias to corrupt investigations into government corruption and a case of child rape and a cover-up. The threat to equal justice under law is not that Kathleen Kane is a standard issue Democratic Liberal (FYI Liberal is not equivalent to Leftist - the ideological issues are a distration).

The issue is Who is most likely to enforce the law with equal justice for all? and as President Clinton, accurately stated, it is the candidate who is independent and who is most experienced in matters of municipal corruption and child sexual assaults and who has actually prosecuted and tried cases in Pennsylvania courtrooms.

What does Middle East war have to do with AG race? Please focus on what I say and not what you imagine me to think. You are simply wrong. Patrick Murphy actively participated in the war in Iraq defending the Constitution and American Freedom and he is owed our thanks.

The whole point of a "nonpartisan" observation on PA politics is not not to draw partisan lines, but rather to look out at the prevailing political climate and an historical perspective.

That's why my friend stated (from my paraphrasing her):

So this lawyer sees a Freed/Murphy match-up with Freed winning. The more conservative, establishment candidate always gets it for AG in PA. However, she offered a caveat. Republican Governor Corbett is not highly liked and was recently AG, so if a D were to win, she sees it as a Corbett backlash more than anything else and this alone means this is the best year a D has ever had to win as AG.

That to me is tying Freed to an unpopular Corbett. Speaking to "conflicts of interest" that no doubt exist makes it partisan, so she stayed away form that.

As you know, I personally can't stand Corbett and consider him a bought-and-paid for establishment political hack (and an idiot).

Due to this, it will be very hard for me to vote for Freed.

That being said, I have time to wait to see how things play out. I'm not going to make a rash decision though I am leaning Kane - even though you personally are hurting her cause with me.

I am not a political insider like you are, Bob, who decides early on which candidate to promote. Nothing wrong with what you are doing. I just prefer to be more deliberate and not to jump on the first candidate who comes along who seems right - and the last thing I will ever do is just vote on a party line, for the person who has the best shot at winning or for selfish reasons without thinking about how a candidate will benefit/harm citizens as a whole.

In 2010, Tom Corbett swamped a well-funded and wll organized opponent, 54.4% to 45.9% of the vote, the most salient test of popularity for a politician. Tom Corbett won all but four counties in Pennsylvania, including Dan Onorato's home county of Allegheny.

The reason that this year is a good year for a Democrat to win the Attorney General election is, among many, that the Republican is so conflicted and compromised. The conventional wisdom is that voters view Republicans as better on law enforcement issues than they do Democrats. This year there is reason to think that a well funded and qualified Democrat can change that default perception.

Additionally, there is a strong and principled grassroots in the Republican party who view the Republican Establishment Insiders as the obstacle to economic freedom and more jobs and look at the Establishment at primarily enriching and empowering themselves at the expense of the electorate. It should be made clear that all Democrats are in politics for self-serving reasons. Therefore, if the Republican grassroots, sometimes called Tea Party or Patriots, turn on the Establishment Endorsed candidate, the Democrats can win if they have have an independent and qualified candidate and it appears that Kathleen Kane is that candidate. Kathleen Kane is independent of both party leadership and union leadership and special interests because she is self-funded.

Therefore, it is most likely that Kathleen Kane is the most likely candidate to enforce the law with equal justice for all. This is good for all of us.

Things change, of course, and we shall see how this all evolves. My goal is to try to stay ahead of the conventional curve and, actively, get information and data on the candidates, not to make predictions which I am not smart enough to do.

Dems Murphy, Kane, spending heavily in Pa. AG race  Associated Press April 13, 2012

Kane, a former Lackawanna County prosecutor who has relied mostly on her husband's wealth to finance her campaign, had $633,000 in the bank after spending $1.4 million.

Murphy, a former two-term congressman and former Army lawyer from Bucks County, had $415,000 on hand after $1.2 million in expenditures.

Kane is Able

Tue, Apr. 17, 2012 Our choice: Kane for attorney general Daily News Staff Report Philadelphia Daily News

Next week’s primary gives voters a chance to weigh in on 15 contested state House races, a few special elections, a race for auditor general, and a battle for the Democratic candidacy for attorney general.

It’s not a long list of contests, but the Daily News focused on one big race for the sole endorsement we’ll be offering this primary season: The race for attorney general.

....

Kane, who has an impressive endorsement from Bill Clinton, has served as prosecutor in Lackawanna County for more than a decade. She specialized in sexual-abuse cases, public corruption and fraud cases, as well as murders, assaults and rapes. She makes her case that prosecutions should not be colored by political ambitions, and vows to prosecute crime regardless of political party. Her familiarity with the state’s court system will help. In fact, her focus on “crime” instead of “issues” won us over. She would push for more transparency in the chemicals used in fracking, and recognizes the perils confronting the state’s consumers, which get more complicated by the day.

In Pennsylvania, the attorney general’s post has been a springboard to higher office. We find Kane’s single-minded focus on being a prosecutor encouraging. We also think this is a state with a paucity of women in higher office, and her victory could encourage other candidates to begin to even out the balance." (emphasis added)

What’s this about Kane giving $500 to Corbett last election?

What’s this about Kane marrying into a very wealthy Family Trucking Business with said family money bankrolling here campaign and while Kane is Able Logistics has thwarted all attempts at unionization?

Perhaps not as liberal as I thought she was.

If I was registered D and could vote next week, it would be a tough choice between the two.

Kane has experience prosecuting under PA law, but Murphy did the same as a JAG.

Kane is not beholden to state Democratic political machine, while Murphy is.

Kane has no elected experience – which I generally see as a good thing, but then, Murphy was in the same boat when he ran for Congress yet he sold-out to the establishment.

As far as records go, Kane really has nothing to fact check.

Murphy is an ardent supporter of Obama, opposed the Iraq War escalation by Bush, voted 100% pro-choice, supported repealing “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”, supports the Second Amendment and has a concealed carry permit (some may like some of these positions and not others).

I give both candidates credit for supporting women’s rights and LGBT rights (essentially “rights” as all individuals have the right to be treated equally as long as they don’t harm the equal rights of others. Making it collective often promotes discord and does more harm than good in my view, but I understand that is the way it is).

As far as electability goes to win the general election, Murphy has the name recognition and the backing of just about every prominent D politician in the state.

This will be a low-turn-out primary as there are no other high profile elections to vote on next week, so Murphy’s establishment backing will help (not that I like it).

I’m not even going to make a choice since I can’t vote in the D primary. Will reevaluate the D winner against Freed in the general.

Kathleen Kane is a liberal. I am an expert on this. She is a Clinton Democrat not a Left Wing Progressive Obama ideologue.

The point is Kathleen Kane is focused on law enforcement not advancing any political agenda and Kathleen Kane is not tainted by ties to party leadership.

politeia, you are off the mark on non essential issues.

Who is most likely to competently and fairly enforce the law without fear or favor?

Dave Freed and Patrick Murphy are opportunistic career politicians, party hacks.

That's why I said I am leaning Kane's way, but she has to get by the establishment D insider first in the primary.

However, if she is so liberal, why did she donate $500 to Corbett? I can't see a true liberal ever doing that.

For me to comfortably vote for her in the general I need to hear an explanation as to why she personally donated to Corbett's campaign.

Video with Bill Clinton for Kathleen Kane. I was at this event. He is good... and dead on.

Bill Clinton: “Who’s more likely to do more good in this job? The answer is Kathleen Kane,” Clinton says. “She has handled more than three thousand cases. If you want somebody who’s both tough and smart, both somebody who’s got a steel spine and a caring heart, Kathleen Kane is your candidate.”

Patrick Murphy is an opportunistic career politician dependent on party leadership for $$$, for union “volunteers”.

Kathleen Kane is not only far more experienced at prosecuting the kinds of cases that the AG prosecutes but is independent of party leadership and union leadership.

The Republican is "Tom Corbett’s man", a Harrisburg Insider ; not good for any of us.

Kathleen Kane wins Democratic nomination for attorney general
By Amy Worden
Inquirer Staff Writer

(Click highlighted green above to go to article)

I also found this interesting from the article:

The attorney general is paid $152,000 a year overseeing 700 people and has a budget of $81 million to investigate and prosecute everything from child predators and Capitol corruption to tax delinquencies and consumer fraud.

So the top law-enforcement official in the state (who IMO opinion deals with far more important issues than Cleland) is paid $152,000 while LM township manager Doug Cleland gets paid 30% more than that with a much smaller budget and far fewer employees to manage.

Why not pay Cleland $1 million a year? The way the commissioners in LM operate, the more you pay township employees the more they are worth. Cleland would then be worth more than the president and would be on the high end of the 1%'ers (his current salary already puts Cleland in the top 1.5% of wage earners in the country), so it would mean LM has the best government bureaucrat in the country - just because we pay him the most.

As for Kane, I think she has a great shot. Corbett is despised for the forced ultrasounds on women and Freed could be toast due to that one issue alone.
