I just saw this bit of good news in my mailbox. Seems that there has been an arrest in connection with last month's armed robbery of Hymie's Deli.
On July 14, 2012, at 9:03 p.m., an armed robbery occurred at Hymie's Restaurant, located at 342 Montgomery Ave. in Merion. Four suspects entered the restaurant and began ordering all persons in the restaurant to the front of the store where they were then ordered to lay on the ground. The employees and patrons were then ordered to turn over their cell phones and wallets and the manager was instructed to open a nearby register and the cash was removed. Shortly thereafter all the suspects ran from the front of the store and out the back door and fled the area.
As a result of the investigation, Lower Merion detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Michael Shawn Schaefer (LKA unknown).
On July 24, 2012, Lower Merion detectives, with the assistance of Philadelphia Police, located and arrested Schaefer in the area of S. Fairhill Street in Philadelphia. Schaefer was arraigned the following day by District Justice Karen Zucker and bail was set at $500,000 cash.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, August 8th at 12:00 p.m. (noon) at Magisterial District Court 38-02-04, 111 Union Ave., Bala Cynwyd, PA.
The investigation is continuing in order to identify and charge additional suspects in this robbery.
For further information, contact Sgt. John Stillwagon at (610) 645-6228.
This is great news, but please keep in mind that this was merely an arrest. Mr. Schaefer is presumed innocent unless he pleads guilty or is convicted in a trial.
