On the afternoon of March 23, 1931, a group of boys were playing alongside a creek that ran through the old St. Davids Golf Club. They dawdled about until one boy suggested that they build a torch. A sturdy stick was secured, and rags wrapped around one end. One boy produced some matches, but the rags were damp and refused to ignite. Another boy ran home and returned with a bottle of rubbing alcohol. As they soaked the rags with alcohol, someone struck a match, igniting not only the rags but the alcohol in the bottle. A jet of fire shot out of the bottle, directly into the face of a boy named Jay Phillips.
