Racism in Gladwyne?

Now this is an interesting news tidbit du jour: according to the news, a flyer is circulating about Aaron McKie who is planning to move to Gladwyne. Now it is a crying shame the McMansion he is building is super unattractive, but the rest of this? This flyer basically encourages Gladwyne residents to rally up the townfolk and pitchforks and bar him from entry to Gladwyne...So, is the issue that generated the flyer the fact that he lied when trying to get a gun permit (which in itself involves purported domestic violence issues), or is it race related? Gladwyne might be like 90210 (well, it's 19035), but ummm, the only prerequisite for residence these days is if you can afford to live there...not your skin color, right? That's right, right?

Castor Urges County To Continue Barnes Fight

Castor urges county to continue Barnes fight
By MARGARET GIBBONS, Times Herald Staff
COURTHOUSE — Montgomery County Commissioner Bruce L. Castor Jr. Monday called on his fellow commissioners to continue the legal battle to keep the renowned Barnes art collection in Lower Merion.
Castor said that, as a candidate for commissioner last year, he pledged to do everything legally possible to keep the approximate $6-billion’s worth of Impressionist art from moving to a new, but not yet built, museum in Philadelphia.

Where's Waldo....errr, Paolino?

File under inappropriate politiciking behavior?

You know, if you live around the Main Line in Lower Merion, even if you are a Democrat or Independent, you know every year there is a tradition that the members of the Main Line Republican Women's Club does....they hold this big dinner and pay tribute to someone special.

This year it was John Templeton of Bryn Mawr.

This event is not for politicking, it's a feel good-celebrate-an-awardee event.

Trails and Tribulations

So there seems to be some uproar going on with regard to the proposed River Trail(s) through Gladwyne...it started at last week's meeting (we couldn't help but hear as it it dragged on as we waited for news on Ardmore), and a couple curious things happened, including lambasting an Inquirer article that had obviously been placed for maximum exposure - why we even covered that article at the time. And then there was the thing if this is a proposed or discussed trail? If we're talking about it, and if the apparent king of trail making Bob Thomas is doing studies and making presentations, then isn't it proposed?

But now there is a lot of back and forth. Mostly about it being or not being continuous. Does it have to be that way? Do people really want to go through the Noise Fume Pass? The strip that would run between the Schuylkill Expressway and live train tracks? Why not just take that part out? Radnor Township's trail isn't continous, and after years of fighting over that in that community, the trail is there and people seem to enjoy it....as a non continous trail.

Can we as a community please find a middle ground? We actually urge everyone to come together and find a middle ground, lest Lower Merion be torn apart at taxpayer expense over yet another issue. Find a middle ground, make an issue a non-issue.

It also seems to be a whole trail movement in Montgomery County. We didn't know until it started to affect our communities. While we believe trails as a general concept are good things, we think maybe Lower Merion needs to pause for thought? Seriously, read these things found simply by Googling:

Springfield Sun: Cresheim Trail study released. Now what?

Does Something Smell About The River Road Sewer?

Commissioner Dellheim seemed a tad irritated this evening when dealing with this Public Works Committee on the River Road Sewer topic didn't she? Why was she being in a word, snippy? Sorry to be sour grapes, but we feel these people deserve a greater degree of respect and if they want to ask about costs or talk about costs, then darn it all, they should be allowed to do so....After all, they are going to be paying for this - people of moderate incomes, retirees, and so forth. We're all not millionaires on this bus!

Disclaimer: SAC believes in full disclosure. The facts as they have been relayed to us are believed to be 100% truthful. We know a politician or two will get their knickers in a twist undoubtedly. They are free to post their responses as their First Amendment rights. We believe the truth is the ultimate defense, and why would these residents lie? They have no reason to, and they aren't..they are merely trying to NOT get screwed over AGAIN.

254 Righter's Mill Road before the BOC TONIGHT!

Once again the issue of the development of 254 Righter's Mill Road will be before the township...this time at tonight's BOC meeting. Following the B&P meeting, the neighbors and developer were asked to meet and try to work out a compromise. This wasn't very successful. Our neighborhood met a few times to work out development options we could live with that were compliant with Sec. of the Interiors Standards and township code. Two of our reps met with the Gervertz contingent to convey our thoughts...from what we gather since we were not present, they were not very receptive.

We have just discovered the various blog postings on your website concerning development of the Winter property, and we are writing to correct statements attributed to us and published by SAC under its own name and Doran249.

Have You Been To the Gladwyne Lunch Recently? Why Not?

Now lookee here SAC fans and others, with all the trips to Righters Mill Road to check out 254 and other homes, did you all stop at the "Lunch" for a wee gnosh?

Well, after being forced out in 2005 because goodness knows the Main Line Mavens need all the help they can get and they can only get it from OVER PRICED salons, the fine folks of the Gladwyne Lunch are better than ever!

Gladwyne Lunch is still the best game in town for breakfast, lunch, and a reminder of what Gladwyne used to be like all over---- charming, quaint, and COOL!

The new and improved Gadwyne Lunch is still on Youngsford Road, tucked slightly behind another SAC Gladwune favorite, The Guard House.

Ardmore Shutterbug and Superboy had a yen for Gladwyne Lunch at lunch, so they went to check out the lunch bunch. They asked MainLineClicks to share the photos here:

If You Live In Lower Merion, You Have The Right To Speak Out

Along with the fact that some systems, codes, laws, etcetera need fixing in Lower Merion, so does attitude.

Last evening at Building and Planning during the discussion of 254 Righters Mill Road, once again something irritating ond at this point old, occured again.

A resident from our neighborhood who has lived in Lower Merion Township as a resident for 31 years spoke up about this project.

This Lower Merion resident has the right to speak. If you live in the township no matter who you are, you have the right to speak up and out about what is going on in your immediate neighborhood and about whatever else concerns you township-wide.

254 Righters Mill Road Before Building & Planning TONIGHT!!

The development proposed for 254 Righters Mill Rd. (a lovely victorian that will be muddled with 2 townhouses and 3 two car garages tacked on the back) will be before the commissioners meeting tonight. It's really important that we can get as many people as possible to attend.

This developer needs to be awarded a "Certificate of Appropriateness" for a completely innappropriate 14,000 sq.ft. building to be dropped in the middle of a neighborhood of 2,000 +/- modest homes... right in the middle of the Gladwyne HISTORIC DISTRICT!

254 Righters Mill Road goes before HARB tomorrow

Just a quick note to let those interested in this development within the Gladwyne Historic District will be before HARB tomorrow, Tues, June 26th at 8am. We just received our meeting agenda today so we're sorry for the late notice.

This development of 2 large townhouses and 3 two-car garages attached to a big old victorian was given the okay by the zoning hearing board who decided to ignore the fact that these are in fact townhouses, not apartments. In this case even though it walks like a duck, etc, etc, it's an apartment.

How About Transit Oriented Development For Gladwyne And Penn Valley?

Can't you just see it? Transit Oriented Development ("TOD") for Gladwyne and Penn Valley? Can't you see it, a little MUST for 19035 and 19072?

Wow! The possibilities are endless! You see, there are bus stops in Gladwyne and Penn Valley for SEPTA. This means we can put transit oriented development right there in the highest end of high end real estate! Why not? From Barkers Mill area to Righters Mill Road, the plans are already ongoing for condominiums. Perfect!

Zoning vs. Historic Districts: 254 Righters Mill Road, Gladwyne

We are watching this case closely in Haverford:

Debate continues over 254 Righters Mill Road
By:CHERYL ALLISON 04/18/2007

The would-be developer of a property in historic Gladwyne Village returned to Lower Merion's zoning board last week with an answer to one question, but left with at least two more to research.

After another three-hour session, the board closed the hearing for testimony in the long-running case of the 1880 Victorian farmhouse at 254 Righters Mill Road.

Gladwyne and Haverford Face History Lessons

Our neighborhood is, to be honest, still mixed on making our 'hood a historic district...there are many opinions and many questions...but as for what Gladwyne is going through? There is no question there...it sucks...we've been to the development movie and we can all agree, it's a T-shirt we've got and would like to give back, thank you.

254 Righter's Mill Road Update

Just wanted to update interested parties on the development plans of 254 Righter's Mill Road, in the historic district of Gladwyne. This is a lovely old Victorian in need of a great deal of TLC. The new owner, self-proclaimed development "hobbiest," Gary Gervertz had planned to attach 2 townhouses and 3 two-car garages to the main home. The small in-law cottage in the back would be replaced with a new mcmansion.

And so it continues - up on the www.lowermerion.org Township Meeting Hit Parade comes the news they are not letting the dust settle ...so sorry, in this pro-development-seeming township, was that a tad sarcastic? Bummer...but then again we are members of the National Sarcasm Society (like we need your support)...just a little joke to lighten the seriousness of how quickly this is progressing.

Folks, the details are below and we urge you to show up if possible...It's not just one road at risk here. Don't let another community be destroyed, especially this community...if this all happens, then no historic designation in this township is safe, and well it doesn't exactly set a steller example for the rest of Pennsylvania either. It is time to start saying no to development again.

Git R' Done people and don't accept being told there is nothing that can be done or the Municipal Planning Code says otherwise, blah, blah, blah:

Just returned from the HARB meeting

Just returned from the HARB meeting regarding 254 Righters Mill Road.

The purpose of this meeting was to specify which part of the property is historically significant within its own context. This means as a "Victorian" everything not Victorian is not significant. So if there are additions to the property that were built in 1910, even though this addition may older than some houses in the district even a couple of doors down ... this addition is not significant.

Connection Lost: Gladwyne Cell Tower Debate Evaporates (for now)?

Main Line Life:Gladwyne cell phone tower 'taken off the table'
By:Cheryl Allison 02/01/2007

A controversy that has roiled emotions in Lower Merion for more than a year could be put to rest next week.

At a board of commissioners meeting next Wednesday, Main Line Life has learned, a subcommittee formed to study options for improving wireless coverage in Gladwyne will recommend against building a new, tall cell phone tower.

In an interview, Commissioner Jenny Brown, chairman of the Ad-Hoc Wireless Committee, said it has voted unanimously to recommend that the cell tower approach be "taken off the table."

She said it would recommend instead that the township pursue the less obtrusive Distributed Antenna System, or DAS, technology employing a network of antennas on shorter utility-type poles to close gaps in service.

The subcommittee was given the task last November of sorting through the volumes of reports from various wireless consultants, after a year of board discussions and public hearings had produced no consensus.

Hot Picks.....

Hot Picks - Here on the SAC Site ,is a link to a cool and chic local photographer.

We like her stuff , so why not spread the joy?

Need a photographer? Want to check out a photographer's work?

Check out Gladwyne's Joanne Posse Photography and also see where MainLineClicks popped up a couple photos including one called "Perfect Butterfly". Joanne also has a studio in Manayunk at "The Mill Studios".

We hear she used to be part of Susan Beard Design once upon a time --- We assume that is o.k. to reference because it's not like it is a state secret or something if it was, we assume that Ms. Beard would have removed Joanne from her old website from Party Space featuring Joanne! On that site Joanne was described thusly:

Since she graduated from the Philadelphia Art Institute in 1997, Joanne's work has been published in Philadelphia Magazine, Player Magazine and International Jeweler Magazine. She has also worked for fashion show producers and modeling agencies both in Philadelphia and New York City.....Joanne combines all of her skills with her enthusiasm for working with clients. The result, as all of her clients will tell you, is a storybook documentary captured on film....Her fine art focuses on European landscapes, capturing the architectural beauty of other cultures.

Anyway, we compared the two, and we're sure there are different price points as one is a huge studio and the other is an independent....and the independent, this Joanne, seems very artistic...her photos seem to speak, so enjoy a peek at the website!!!

We love to promote local business people, especially artists, and in case you missed out coverage for the January edition of First Friday Main Line, we have two more local discoveries for you:
