Real Estate Booming on the Main Line?

Despite Philadelphia Magazine, the Inquirer and Daily News touting how great the real estate market is in the Philly area to make their advertisers and owners happy, I think this article on Allen Iverson trying to sell his Villanova home says a lot.

According to the Wall Street Journal's Private Properties column, Iverson has dropped the price to a "desperation deal" of $3.999 million — a million less than he paid for it in 2003. (/crunches numbers on calculator watch.) Yep. That's not good business.

Villanova Students Discuss Lack of Housing in Student Publication

So, it's not just us average folk noticing these non profit institutions growing their enrolled numbers and then not having any place to put them? So once again, it's back to the institutions. But of course we all know institutions are prized like rubies....full time, permanent residents? Why they are replaceable...but this points out that these Institutions have a choice as to HOW many they bring onto their land footprint, and they can't house them all, or provide parking for them all, so why do they do it? Is it greed? Or ignorance? Or both?

So when we say how many students are too many students, maybe we're not the only ones saying that, huh?

Villanovan:'Nova's Own Housing Crisis
Editorial Board
Issue date: 8/28/08 Section: Opinion

This newspaper has written many times before about the deplorable state of campus housing for underclassmen. Most everyone is aware of the state (and lack of) campus housing, but in the University's defense, it faces major challenges within and outside of the Villanova community in order to have residence halls that will accommodate every student.

This is Scary and LMPD Deserves Kudos

Yes, they DO deserve kudos. And so does this kid for keeping his wits about him and not getting hurt. But it baffles me as well that people think we're like 40 years ago still and can leave doors unlocked. Unlocked doors are an invitation to trouble. People need to pay attention. Yesterday, as a matter of fact, I came home yestersday to a "that person doesn't belong here" in my driveway. They claimed they were looking for someone. My gut said not to believe them and I stayed in my car with my cell phone ready and suggested they leave. They did.

Another Shame of The Main Line: The Sordid Tale of Rosalind Lavin...

Jill Porter: Channel your fury over Lavin case to change assisted-living regulations
By Jill Porter
Philadelphia Daily News

YOU'RE NOT alone if you're still haunted by the fact that Rosalind Lavin got off so easy.

You're not alone if you think she should have been criminally prosecuted for the horrific conditions endured by the residents of her personal-care homes.

I continue to be contacted by readers appalled that Lavin, who lives lavishly on the Main Line, was able to get away with paying $700,000 and avoid acknowledging wrongdoing to resolve a federal investigation.

Wow. Got a call from someone about this who asked me what I thought about someone named Rosalind Lavin.

"Who?" I said.

"Just Google" said the other person...."it's horrifying"

So I Googled...and am appalled. Appalled that this Villanova resident could do these things she is charged with, and somewhat appalled that her sentance in the end wasn't 100% a punishment to fit the crime, and was more like a pricey slap on the wrist?

As a matter of fact, can one disagree with what Jill Porter says on June 11th?

What's Up With The Crabapple and The Appleford Estate ?

Appleford Estate in Villanova is one of our township's beautiful historic resources. From the gracious home to the utterly fabulous gardens, it's a real gem.

Except not according to some crabapple who lives next door. Except does he really live next door or is he just another developer/real estate speculator who happens to own a property next door who is suing Appleford and/or the township? And what gives with this gent? It's not like Appleford appeared overnight. He purchased the property knowing that this property was next door, and purchased this property knowing there were weddings there.

Main Line Embarassments: Reid Kids Are Addicts, But Are Parents Enablers?

This area has been talking about Andy Reid and his spoiled druggie sons since February! Haven't we hear enough? Empathy and sympathy are becoming fleeting emotions when all you hear is how one of these two druggie, yet good Morman sons has failed a drug test, been found with more drugs, etc. What are Andy and Tammy Reid doing? If they live in the same house with these boys, we can understand them not knowing initially what was up with their bad seeds, but now? How can you keep excusing the parents? Granted, these boys aren't boys any longer, but legal adults, but the question has to be asked: are the parents enablers?

Whatever the case may be, this ongoing drama is yet another black eye on this area. The saga over Baldwin School vs. fired teacher vs. spoiled parents is bad enough, but now this? And add to that all the murders in Philadelphia, and the horrible story of murdered Philadelphia police officer Chuck Cassidy, who left behind a wife and kids. Officer Cassidy isn't a multi millionaire like Andy Reid must be, and he lost HIS life doing one of the toughest jobs in the world: being a police officer.

So Andy Reid, Tammy Reid, we hope you get it together because at this point y'all need to decide what is more important: fame or family. Dealing with addictions is not easy we're told, nor is the path to a drug free life simplistic. But seriously? Maybe it is time to say sayonara to this area and concentrate on your family. The Philadelphia area deserves better. It's not our collective job to watch your sons, and every single time they are picked up for something new it costs the taxpayers more money for babysitting.

Your kids are addicts. Own it. Get used to it. Deal with it. And maybe, just maybe, you might want to publicly address this family issue taking up so much of our time. This stopped being a private family matter a long time ago.

Nannny Basher Susan Tabas Temper Gets Probation

Wow...when daddy was a somebody, future generations sure get preferential treatment by judges around here.

So, Nanny Basher Bullytante Susan Tabas Temper, oops, Tepper got probation. She did a stint in the looney bin, and with her bleached blond "companion" and father of one of her kids in tow, she walked out of court on probation. (Hard to say who uses more hair products with this odd couple)

Wasn't she on probabtion from 2006's Nanny Bashing Episode when oops she did it again? Shall we ask bookies to start laying odds now?

Well she an Britney both need fashion advice...Susie Brusie needs to give up wearing Nanny Beater Blue to court, and talk about Fashion Emergency, have you seen her lover/companion on TV? His hair is so brassy blond, and well, umm, he looks like he is part of a circus...whatjamacallems? Circus Carneys? So surprised he didn't wear sequins to court....LOL

In all seriousness? The punishment doesn't fit the crime. Hit her family where it hurts at least - make her fund and work at an abused women's shelter or something...but a $600 fine? That is a spa day to that whack job with wallet.

Main Line Mom Gets 15 Months Probation In Nanny Assault

Main Line socialite Susan Tabis Tepper, who assaulted her nanny, was sentenced to 15 months probation Monday.

Villanova, How Pious Thou Art

Not too long ago, Villanowhere was in the news over a rape allegation.....and the story has died on the vine...no one seems interested how it took quite a few days before the rape was reported to outside authorities, no one has ever answered the question which does Villanova do their own rape kits on campus? As a matter of fact, once the alleged rapists were booted off campus and out of the school, the issue is dead on arrival - NO, no one can make the rape victim press charges, and is the question still out there on how well she was "counseled" by the school?

As the students come back and inhabit loads more student rentals (are they all approved everywhere?) and dorms, comes this latest thing: outrage over a comic the school hired. What utter pomposity. How PG-13 is a campus where alleged rapes occur anyway?

Is Villanova Covering Anything Up? Or Are They Doing The Best They Can?

Everyone everywhere is talking about the rape at Villanova. Even on this website. The most disturbing conversation to date was one where a comment ran like this: "Remember Duke". Nor is this Radnor Police Department's fault - they can't press charges unless the victim wants to, and they couldn't have responded any faster anyway, because can it be said they found out when all of us, the public at large, found out? Students interviewed on camera don't seem too happy about this either...

Hey now, every situtation is different and what is the one darn thing that no one seems to be talking enough:

Is Villanova covering something up? Are they doing all they could really do? Can it be considered that Villanova University might be guilty of obstruction on some level by waiting ten days to report this? Did they cover up evidence for future civil or criminal cases? What are the policies of the school that they would wait almost ten days to report a rape, allow all affected parties to remain on campus together for about five days after the incident? And most importantly, is Villanova's health center equipped to do a rape kit when a student claims they were sexually assaulted? Will evidence be preserved and to who's standards? Why didn't Villanova University immediately take a woman who came to them and said she was raped to a proper hospital to have a rape kit done? Is there any evidence to be preserved for this victim? Will the victim get due process if she comes forward and presses charges?

Maybe it is or isn't odd that the student has decided to not press charges at this time. There are a few schools of thought on that, all speculation in truth because none of us are the victim.

Ok, well this twisted fairy tale, The NEW Philadelphia Story has been the stuff People Magazine and Page Six (New York Post) thrive on from beginning to end...while former Main Liner Tory Burch has shed her country club "mommy and me" demeanor to become a vixen and nouveau New York City social climbing social-light and bunkmate of Lance Armstrong, Tabas-Temper seems destined for a straight jacket or striped p.j.s as everyday attire....and oh good golly, they refer to her still as a millionaire in the media - as if she earned any of that moola and wealth her family accumulated through hard work? Seriously, how embarassing is it her grandfather, father, and uncle were literally a rags to riches story....don't think there is a pill for selfish and self-important (if there was 80% of the Main Line would be on it)....Here's the latest:

Main Line heiress pleads guilty to nanny attack
By Kathleen Brady Shea
INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Villanova heiress Susan Tabas Tepper, who has spent six weeks in prison on probation-violation charges, pleaded guilty today to physically harrassing her nanny and the woman's 9-year-old daughter on May 20.

The 44-year-old mother of four appeared in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court, where she acknowledged that the attacks violated her probation for attacking a different nanny in May 2006.

Sentencing for the offenses will be scheduled after the banking-and-hotel heiress completes 30 days of court-ordered in-patient mental health treatment, to begin as early as Friday. Tepper faces a maximum of 18 months behind bars.

Phila Biz Journal Says Foundation for Islamic Education Property is For Sale in Villanova?

The June 1 to 7, 2007 (Volume 26, Number 15) print edition of The Philadelphia Business Journal reports on page 4 in an article by Natalie Kostelni something we bet no one much knows on the Main Line:

The Foundation for Islamic Education in Villanova is for sale!

And we quote:

“The Foundation for Islamic Education has put its 23-acre campus up for sale, making available another developable tract on the land-constrained Main Line.

NannyGate Update: Nannies Speak out on Tabas-Tepper

Susan Tabas Tepper, the gossip fodder gift that keeps on giving. If she keeps getting accused of whacking folks, she's gonna get her own topic category on blogs all over Philadelphia. Nannies are talking all over too...just out of curiousity, does NO ONE raise their own kids anymore? And the "friend" coming to her defense? It's a compensated friend, someone formerly in her employ...and a man...this whole NannyGate seems to partially be a girl thing, doesn't it? Glad someone is sticking up for her though as everyone deserves support in their hour of need...her family seems oddly silent though, don't they? And what about that loving boyfriend? Has anyone seen him defend his lady's honor, especially because he is alleged to have been present? Here's this morning's round up:

Annette John-Hall | The quiet anger felt by 'the help'
By Annette John-Hall
Inquirer Columnist

The news that Main Line socialite Susan Tabas Tepper had allegedly gone all Naomi Campbell on a nanny again didn't sit too well with the sisterhood of nannies gathered at Rittenhouse Square yesterday.

That's where most of Center City's babysitters congregate. You know, down on 18th and Walnut, by the fountain. Especially on perfect mornings, nannies on the Square are as predictable as perennials in the springtime.

Yesterday, they were out in force - black, white, Asian, Latino, almost all foreigners - a virtual bouquet of caregivers, their caravan of strollers parked, their eagle eyes focused on their preschool charges, almost all of them white.

You better believe they had an opinion about Tepper, the 44-year-old Villanova villainess who stands accused of assaulting her most recent nanny, Urszula Kordzior, only months after landing in community service for smacking down another valued employee. The nanny's 9-year-old daughter allegedly got pushed when she tried to help her mom.

Beating Nannies is a blogger's idea of paradise....the possibilities are endless.

Take PhillyBurbs:

Rich old bat wallops another nanny
Says here that Villanova’s favorite gangsta, Susan Tabas Tepper, went medieval on another nanny’s ass this weekend. Perhaps she did this in celebration of the upcoming end of her 1-year probation for doing the same thing last year. This time she beat up a little girl, too. Give her mad props, yo. She gots street cred now.

Mike Tyson isn’t doing anything lately - maybe judgie-wudgie should assign him Tepper’s nanny. What a great sitcom that would be. We’ll get Phyllis Diller to play the Tepper; “Get out of my way, you neanderthal - you’re blocking the bar....” “Gee, lady, I’m twyin’ ta get the kid asleep....

Dear Susan Tabas Tepper,

Tsk, tsk, tsk. Bullying another nanny? I hope you left the produce out of it this time. Honey, didn’t you see Crash? You have to be nice to your domestics, dearie, because when your ‘tude leaves you in a heap at the bottom of the stairs and you end up in bed with a broken leg, who do you think’s going to help you go pee-pee?

"Nanny Get Your Gun" "Tepper, Tepper"

Oh not to pile on, but we are and we will....and we can't decide who's online headlines we like better: The Daily News's "Nanny Get Your Gun" or Main Line Life's "Tepper, Tepper"...now, we have to ask What is wrong with this woman??? Why does she have to behave like a circus side show freak?

Susie, Susie, Susie...tsk tsk tsk...what have we told you??? Don't beat the help!

If Montgomery County lets her walk on this one, well then as residents on Montgomery County how do we have faith in the system? If rich unhappy divorcees can beat the help, and continue to get away with it, there is no justice.

And what was up with Main Line Mama's legal counsel? They should have shut her up in front of the cameras yesterday. And if the devoted boyfriend, as per Susie, was right there witnessing the whole thing, why wasn't he by his beloved's side as she got hauled off in cuffs? Well, the rich are different, that's for sure, and my oh my, what is in the water along the Main Line that breeds crazies like this?

We are guessing that Ms. T-T would have preferred the Ritz last night...bet she didn't find a mint on her pillow in the big house, pokey, whatever you want to call jail. And if her temper is so out of control, can she be trusted to be a responsible parent? After all this time she is accused also of shoving a minor child....

But one thing we found utterly despicable? The reference in the Daily News by her attorney using a child's cancer to possibly justify her behavior is nasty, ain't it? We all know folks who have cancer, have family members (child and adult) who have cancer, and many of us have been involved very personally in the cancer treatment of loved ones. While that might justify STRESS and emotional upset, it does not legitimize whacking folks when the spirit moves you. And it still gauls us that the graffiti teen, Cameron Plaice, in Radnor got MORE community service and MORE fines for graffiti and she paid LESS for assaulting the last nanny (and yes, the news on that nanny bashing occured May 24, 2006). Truly, money doesn't know who owns it.....

Here's the coverage:

Susan Tepper accused of assaulting *another* nanny

Susan Tepper is in trouble again. As we wrote back in February, Tepper was accused of assaulting a nanny. She was sentenced to one year of probation plus $2,800 in fines and ordered into anger management classes.

Yet, barely three months into her probation, police were called to her Villanova estate Sunday evening. She was accused of getting in an altercation with another nanny, leaving the nanny with scratches on her face as well as bruises. She then allegedly swore at the nanny's 9 year old daughter and shoved her to the ground.

Yep, nothing says "maturity" and "self control" like shoving around children.

by KYW's Brad Segall

A Main Line socialite, already on probation for attacking her nanny last year at this time, has been arrested again on charges she assaulted another nanny over the weekend.

Lower Merion police in Pennsylvania were called to Susan Tabas Tepper’s (above) Villanova estate late Sunday night for a report of an assault. Sergeant John Stillwagon says the nanny told them she was trying to leave the house with her nine-year-old daughter when Tepper became increasingly angry:

"Mrs. Tepper got into an argument with her and tried to forcibly take the keys from her. That’s when the struggle ensued and during the struggle, she scratched her on the face and caused a couple bruises on her body."

Court papers reveal Tepper then swore at the little girl and shoved her to the ground.

Tepper is charged with two counts of simple assault and one count of harassment. The nanny was treated and released.

Main Line Mama Stikes A Deal

No matter who you are, you can't go around beating on people. You can't go around telling those in your employ that they don't matter, or are nobodies - slavery and indentured servitude were abolished long ago.

This whole case shines an unpleasant light on the unsavory underbelly of the affluent Main Line. This woman should consider herself fortunate of her social status (achieved for her by her parents and their hard work over the years), as it can be considered that she might have received much harsher treatment for beating an employee with a bag of carrots if her family wasn't prominent. This heiress has been sentenced to fines, one year probation, community service, and anger management.

We have some suggestions for the community service: driving people for Eldernet, working in a homeless shelter, delivering meals on wheels to shut ins, or working in a hospice immediately come to mind.

We almost feel sorry for this Main Line Mama, because this will haunt her much like Mayflower Madam Status will always haunt Sidney Biddle Barrows, or the inaprropriate actions of heiress strumpet Paris Hilton will always follow her. Of course this Main Line Mama's behavior that got her into trouble is similar to that of another woman who can't keep her hands to herself, Naomi Campbell....

Socialite sentenced in attack on nanny
Susan Tabas Tepper was said to have used carrots and a phone as weapons. She got a year's probation.

The Proper Way a Public Official Should Deal With Conflicts...paying attention LMT?

Lower Merion Commissioners should pay attention to this example set by Montgomery County D.A. Bruce Castor. D.A. Castor is not only recusing himself but his subordinates as well in the cases involving Andy Reid's sons. Why you ask? Because Ross Weiss,is a lawyer at Cozen O'Connor - a firm which represents the Reid sons....HMMMM....and Mr. Weiss is D.A. Castor's treasurer for his county commissioner campaign. See that? Castor isn't receiving direct remuneration, but because a lawyer from the firm of opposing council works on his campaign, he is doing the proper thing. Bruce Castor is doing the right thing here...hopefully others will follow his lead....we can only hope...however, this is yet another reason why Lower Merion needs to review the advice of counsel it has received as a governing body and individuals within that governing body on this touchy subject of what is and isn't a conflict and when disclosure alone is not enough, but recusal is warranted. Like it or not, this is an opinion the public is entitled to, right?
D.A.'s ties mean Pa. will handle Reid cases
By Jeff Shields and Mari A. Schaefer

Pennsylvania's attorney general will handle the separate criminal investigations of Andy Reid's sons after the local district attorney bowed out to avoid a conflict.

Treated equally in the eyes of the law?

As you may or may not know, in Washington, D.C. carved in stone at the Department of Justice is the following inscription flanked by stone pillars:

"Equality under the Law"

As children we are taught that this country is built upon the foundation of liberty and justice for all. With slavery, we saw that this country can slide off its foundations, and in recent years we have seen it again with eminent domain.

As a website called "Free Peltier" reminds us:

Every American schoolchild learns about the Magna (Carta, and the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and learns that these documents make up the body of law that guarantees justice to all. On paper, the American democratic judicial system is engineered to ensure that each individual is indeed treated equally under the law. The people elect legislators who make the laws; they elect governors and presidents who administer the laws;judges are elected or appointed by elected officials, and there judges and juries of peers impartially uphold, interpret, and protect the people's laws. Sometimes it works: sometimes it doesn't.

So we are asking a very uncomfortable question today in light of recent local current events and news: Is everyone treated equally under the eyes of the law? Or are certain folks treated differently?

Years ago the story of the Sixers' star Dr. J and a partying child of his was big local news. Dr. J's kid got busted for a whale of an underage party as we recall...Yet it seems, that the recent sons of high profile sports figure fathers have slid under the radar for quite a while. Even in our local papers, which weekly publish the police briefs or "who's who of DUI". Can anyone recall seeing the alleged crimes referenced in the articles we are going to promote? Just asking.

Famous Fathers and Infamous Sons: Now it's Andy Reid's Turn

Different sons and fathers locally famous for different reasons. This time, the sons aren't these guys, but the sons of Eagles Coach Andy Reid, who lives in Villanova.

Boys will be boys, only these boys, Andy Reid's sons are adults. Granted, the pressure of having a famous father must be tough. And we feel badly for Andy and Tammy Reid as this is probably not so easy to live through and deal with. Of course, at the end of the day it remains to be seen what happens and what is the truth....As they say, the rich are different...Interesting to note, the Reids are Mormons, which makes this sound a little like "Big Love" on HBO.....here are the articles:

Philadelphia Inquirer: Report links Reid son to guns
A TV station said a gun was found in Britt Reid's car, and another in a search of the Reid home Tuesday night.
By Mari A. Schaefer
Inquirer Staff Writer

Police in two suburban municipalities and the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office are continuing investigations into separate traffic incidents involving two of Eagles coach Andy Reid's sons.

The first incident, on Tuesday morning, involved Britt Reid, a second man, and a gun....NBC10, quoting a law enforcement source, reported last night that investigators found a gun in Britt Reid's car, and a platinum handgun during a search of the Reid home Tuesday night in Villanova. That gun was reportedly in a lockbox in the basement.

Will Villanova Law School Earn Another Day in Court?

Talk about "practical application". Maybe Villanova Law students should attend their school's development meetings and court dates regarding the proposed expansion of the Law School?

We have to ask a silly question, Villanova graduate and undergraduate is to totally built out, so for a bunch of smart people they sure can be considered dumb....why not buy another piece of land someplace else? We hear there are two pieces of land they could easily expand to:

Episcopal Academy in Devon- which is for sale

and

American College - which was for sale, then sold, then the deal fell through, currently "destination unknown".

American College is the simplist solution: it is already in Radnor Township, close to Villanova's current campus. The law students and faculty can hop the P&W if the don't have a car, or walk to Septa's R5 Bryn Mawr station. Sheesh, there is even a Septa Bus that runs on Lancaster, right?

Santa has been on Partridge Lane!

Wow! It wasn't a rumor! It's for real! Could this mean that the fervent wishes of those folks on Partridge Lane have been granted? These were the folks we first heard about this time last year under the former board of commissioners. They were fighting a subdivision on their street that they felt would ruin the character of the street, as the neighborhood had been set up we think over a will decades ago. These are the same folks who came out and supported the neighborhood in Haverford who don't want the tower of condo on North Buck Lane (same developer), and the same people who filed suit (see www.montcopa.org public record on case numbers 2005-30193 and 2005-30192).

Well we told you yesterday we had been tipped off that there was a "brokers open house" at 1345 Partridge Lane (house that started it all) yesterday. We confirmed it later with a few realtors.

Well, it's all true! Another interesting note? The realtor is the same person who was before the BOC when he was applying for that demolition permit for 46 Righters Mill Road - the same guy who wanted the waiver of the 90 day stay of execution (demolition). The web of relationships is interesting...mind you the realtor actually sold 46 Righters Mill Road in the end to folks who are preservationist minded, so we hope that he will market this property as is, no McMansions needed.

OUCH! Grogan nips!

Yikes! Remind us to stay on Grogan's good side:

John Grogan | Privilege of class has limits on Main Line
By John Grogan
Inquirer Columnist

On the Main Line, where money, class and privilege collide in a perfect storm of hyper-precious living, there are rules. They are unspoken but ironclad nonetheless.

Poor ......socialite who now finds herself in a bit of a legal jam, appears to have broken some real doozies.

Roughing up the hired help at the mansion and then getting trotted out in public for it is a mondo Main Line no-no. One that can never be quite forgiven or forgotten at the country club.

Très gauche!

..... took out her displeasure by first throwing a bag of carrots (gourmet organic, no doubt) at her, then hitting her on the head with a telephone headset, pulling her hair, breaking her eyeglasses and trying to push her down the stairs.

Temper, temper, my pampered little friend.

Villanova Receives "F" From Students Over Lap Top Theft

It's kinda strange that Villanova didn't notify the student body when a lap top computer was stolen recently. They sent a letter home to loads of mommies and daddies instead. The issue has made the Inquirer and Villanova's approved student publication, The Villanovan.

The students are kinda pissed about this, and we can't say we blame them. It's not like it would have been that hard to notify students. However, in the Op Ed in the Villanovan, the writer states "Not all students behave with the same level of maturity; still, that is no reason to distrust the majority of students who have proven themselves responsible and capable of handling "adult" matters."

Ok, we hear you and so should the University, but in all fairness, if the students want to be treated as adults capable of responsible behavior, we would hope that would filter out into the community of off campus Villanova students both graduate and undergraduate. As we hear it, while most students try to be good neighbors, some need to remember that when they live in small neighborhoods where the homes are close together and the streets are tiny, they need to remember that a lot of their neighbors have small children and no driveways...We're not naming individual streets, this message comes from folks in Ardmore,Haverford,Wayne, and Bryn Mawr....just a suggestion.

Historic Montco Mansion to Be Preserved

The historic mansion in this story is actually in Norristown, but because one of the direct descendants of the family who once owned the mansion lives in Villanova, we are promting this bit of good news. And it is good news in the era of taking down so many historic structures, that one home can be preserved once in a while!
Historic mansion to make history again
By Mari A. Schaefer
Inquirer Staff Writer

The Selma Mansion in Norristown has been home at one time or another to a noted Revolutionary War general, governors of Pennsylvania and Michigan, the founder of Lafayette College, and the mother of Mary Todd Lincoln.

Now, pigeons roost in the upstairs parlor and sewing room of the once grand county estate, which was originally part of a 115-acre farm.

Today, the Norristown Preservation Society will dedicate a historical marker on the site of the house, at Selma and Airy Streets. Next month, the society will become the building's owner and begin restoring the property so it can open as a museum.

Sticky Villanova Zoning Wicket

Zoning limits Muslim group
Lower Merion set terms for how Villanova Islamic foundation uses property.
By Jeff Price
Inquirer Staff Writer

The contentious relationship between the Foundation for Islamic Education and its Villanova neighbors has produced a new zoning order, but it's not clear if either party will accept it.

Both sides have almost three weeks remaining to file a court appeal of the Sept. 14 order by the Lower Merion Township zoning board, setting terms and conditions under which the residential property can be used as a mosque for Islamic services and education.

As recently as last week neither the attorney for the residents nor for the foundation had held detailed talks with their clients about the order.

And residents, because the foundation admitted violating the original 1994 order, want to know how the new one will be enforced.

A key security concern of the neighbors has been to whom the foundation rents the 23-acre grounds on Montgomery Avenue for weekend retreats. A five-day retreat scheduled for Aug. 2-6 was canceled because it exceeded a 12-year-old rule limiting retreats to three days.
