Is The First Amendment only for a Select Few?

We wish to point out an article in the News of Delaware County - Haverford Township Edition (Volume 73, Number 21 Wednesday April 23 - April 29, 2008). There is an article not online we'd like to quote from:

Campaign shenanigans cause primary disruption by Rosalie Pressman, Staff Writer

Meltdown Lisa?

Is Lisa Paolino a politician in meltdown mode? A lot of people are wondering, given the childish and silly "press release" on her blob where she accuses other campaigns of "harassing" her. Seriously? Does that now mean that the judge who told her to stop the madness today in Delco, as well as the judge in Montco yesterday are also harassing her? She gets caught doing something bad, and this is her mature, professional retort...err,response?

We weren't going to replicate press releases even though several other websites are, but now maybe we will. Why? Because we have had enough.

Can we all mostly agree that Ms. Paolino is obviously intellegent enough to run a clean election based on issues, but she has chosen of her own volition to pursue tawdry campaign tactics including but not limited to the phoney ballots and questionasble carwash coupons? Ms. Paolino set the tone, with her actions, did she not? Should Ms. Paolino just leave this party now? Can it be said that the only victims of this process are the voters of the 17th Senate District? If this candidate is such a strong independent, female candidate, why all the breast beating and whining? Connie Williams never whined throughout her tenure in State House and Senate, and she got all the crap in the world thrown at her every single time. She didn't piss and moan that the boys were beating her up, she went on her way with grace and dignity, and won every election, didn't she?

Mimi Says Lisa is Exercising 1st Amendment Rights With Funky Ballots?

Honestly, this is waaaaayyyy too confusing....explain how phony ballots are First Amendment Rights? But then again, is that the same pretzel logic that caused Doug to receive his love note? Is this First Amendment Rights for Dummies or something?

More Phony Election Ballots? Will This Have a Negative Effect on Radnor Township?

Last night Doug broke the news that Ms. Paolino got busted by Montgomery County folks (and a judge named Richard J. Hodgson, apparently)for the oldest slezoid election trick in the books and isn't astounding? What is it? Phony election ballots? Apparently so.

This morning there is an Inquirer story stating that this morning in Delaware County Courthouse there is an emergency hearing for the same thing at 11:30 a.m. Except in Delco, apparently the lilly was gilded further?

We know HaverfordBlog is watching closely since supposedly the Delco version of these fake ballots have apparently surfaced there in Havertown - we don't know about Radnor, does anyone out there? PA Watercooler shows a copy of the confiscated fake ballot....

Here is the scathing Inquirer article:

Posted on Sat, Apr. 19, 2008
Judge blocks a candidate's 'official' GOP sample ballot
By Derrick Nunnally
Inquirer Staff Writer

An acrimonious Republican Senate primary turned litigious yesterday with a fight over endorsement claims on mass-mailed sample ballots.

Pea-green "Official Republican Ballot" forms mailed by Pennsylvania Senate candidate Lisa Paolino list two choices in the 17th District Senate primary: Paolino and "not endorsed."

The ballots, which arrived in Montgomery County mailboxes yesterday, bore a substantial resemblance to the Montgomery County Republican Committee's pea-green "Official Republican Ballot" - which lists Lance Rogers as the endorsed candidate and Paolino not at all.

In the Norristown courthouse yesterday afternoon, Rogers and attorney Robert Kerns - who is unopposed in a May 8 election to lead the county Republican committee - persuaded Common Pleas Court Judge Richard J. Hodgson to block Paolino's campaign from mailing the sample ballots.

Lisa Paolino in trouble for Deceiving Voters!

This just hit the news over on Haverfordblog. Not only was Lisa Paolino found guilty in court for producing phony ballots, but she has refused to turn over documentation related to ballots which may have been previously distributed.

This is big big news, for two reasons:

Is This a Good Political Couple? Lisa Paolino and George Twardy?

Well now, isn't this a political pickle? Readers, politics is just the little gift that keeps on giving, huh? And she can't spell on her own blog!:jawdrop: (Daylin are you having fun watching Republican badminton at it's finest?)

Blob Blog: Lance Rogers Wreckless Claims Against Lisa Paolino
Lance Rogers claims GOP Endorsement that was Never Given, says Lisa Paolino

Uhhhh....can you say "spellcheck" , and WRECKLESS/RECKLESS:

This word has nothing to do with creating the potential for a wreck. Rather it involves not reckoning carefully all the hazards involved in an action. The correct spelling is therefore “reckless.”

ROFL.....get a dictionary...good thing the "official" press release was a little more finished. And speaking of which, here it is. We imagine our friends at HaverfordBlog will be loving this. Twardy is a favorite topic...and not because they perceive him as a beautiful icon. ;) ;-)

Candidates Being Sent to Bed Without Jelly Beans?

Well, well, well... so it IS true? The Attorney General is looking into Wash Gate?

Before we get into that, GrassRootsPA is really covering the elections, huh? Even if you don't agree with all their content, the site is a good read. Also to be considered is what was written on this site this morning. We don't much care for shenanigans that infringe on inalienable rights.

It just seems that the farther this goes, the more stuff that falls out into public view. Politics as usual is not particularly appealing, and maybe that is the status quo in a neighboring municipality, but does that mean that we as voters need to embrace that? Should we as voters embrace that? All we can say is thank goodness the Democrats don't have to deal with all of this skulduggery (what a great word, huh?)...and according to the Inquirer today, the Ghost of Ronnie Past may be sending these candidates to bed without any jelly beans.

As a matter of fact, before we get to the Inquirer article, how about some quotes from Ronald Reagan about politics?

Okay!

Ronald Reagan Quotes: Funny Quotes by President Ronald Reagan
By Daniel Kurtzman, About.com

"It's true hard work never killed anybody, but I figure, why take the chance?"

"Politics is supposed to be the second-oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first."

Lisa Paolino's Legal Letter

Since folks have been asking me both online and off about the legal letter that Lisa Paolino sent me, I have reproduced it below. But first, I'm going to give some background.

Awhile back, a blog post was made by one of our members on this site, titled "Radnor Commissioner Involved in Grade Fixing?", which discussed a grade changing scandal that involved Lisa Paolino, who was a sitting Commissioner in Radnor at the time. The blog post itself really didn't make any accusations, but did cite a source in the way of a newspaper article from the Philadelphia Inquirer. (Original no longer available, reprint here)

What the blog post did do, however, was ask a lot of questions. Apparently Lisa Paolino doesn't like it when people ask questions about her. Instead, I received the following letter from her attorney sometime later. (additional comments follow the letter):

From: fioravantijm @ comcast.net
To: webmaster @ saveardmorecoalition.org
Cc: llslisa @ aol.com
Date: Fri, 06 Jul 2007 18:24:26 +0000

Dear Mr. Muth:

I represent Lisa Paolino who is referenced in a blog which was published at your website today. The contributor to the blog was "RadnorRabbit" and the clear implication of the blog was to the effect that my client had engaged in criminal conduct similar to the conduct of an individual (Mr. Moran) who was recently indicted by a state grand jury for political corruption.

In the view of the undersigned, the blog contribution of RadnorRabbit implied criminality on the part of my client, when, in fact, my client did nothing more than notify the Radnor School District that her daughter was ill, documented the illness and then asked that the District permit a "pass" grade in lieu of a "D" as the final grade for the Ms. Paolino's daughter's "wellness" class.

As you can see, the comparison between my client's conduct and the events which relate to Mr. Moran are not at all analogous, especially under circumstances where the School District and its independent counsel have evaluated the matter involving Ms. Paolino and have determined that the grade change was entirely appropriate. Moreover, no one, with the exception of RadnorRabbit, has even suggested wrongdoing on Ms. Paolino's part, much less conduct which would implicate the criminal law.

As you know, the blog which was published on your website is subject to republication and further comment. Under circumstances where the reputation of Ms. Paolino has already been damaged, with malice, I write with two requests: first, I ask for the identity of RadnorRabbit; second, I ask that you pull the blog from your website so that the republication/comment concern is abated.

Thank you for your consideration.

Very truly yours,

Joseph M. Fioravanti
217 North Monroe Street
Media, PA 19063
(610) 892-7370 phone
(610) 892-7374 fax

My brain pretty much went into shock after reading that. What we have here is an ELECTED OFFICIAL who is trying to shut up her critics by sending legal letters to the webmaster of the site it was on. Unbelievable! Can you possiblly get any more anti-democratic than that? I don't know what things are like where Lisa comes from, but here in the United States, we have this tiny piece of text known as the First Amendment. It explicitly gives us the right to criticize others and call them on their actions. This even extends to our elected officials. In fact, I think that having the ability to complain about one's leaders is the hallmark of a free and open society.

What is even more ironic is that Lisa has this same Freedom of Speech that the rest of us do. If she wanted to dispute the blog posting, she could have easily written her own blog post that tells her own version of events. Heck, if she had asked nicely, I would have even linked to the post from this site in the interest of fairness. Having both sides of the story would allow readers to view both and make their own informed decision. I support the free exchange of information and ideas and think that would have been great if she would have just posted her side of the story.

Instead, Lisa chose to resort to this disgusting bullying tactic and had the audacity to think that she could actually get me to remove an entire member's blog removed because she disapproved of a single posting. Well, guess what? I will not be bullied.

Finally, this letter raises some other interesting questions: has Lisa Paolino attempted to bully any other individuals or civic groups that have spoken poorly of her? Has she forced other blogs off the air through such tactics? These are things that we at the Save Ardmore Coalition would like to know. If you have any information about this, please contact us.

Finally, I would like to end this post with a few relevant quotes about censorship and the Freedom of Speech:
The test of democracy is freedom of criticism. ~David Ben-Gurion

If you don't have this freedom of the press, then all these little fellows are weaseling around and doing their monkey business and they never get caught. ~Harold R. Medina

Books won't stay banned. They won't burn. Ideas won't go to jail. In the long run of history, the censor and the inquisitor have always lost. The only weapon against bad ideas is better ideas. ~Alfred Whitney Griswold, New York Times, 24 February 1959

Thank you for reading, and good night.

-- Douglas Muth, Webmaster, Save Ardmore Coalition

File under inappropriate politiciking behavior?

You know, if you live around the Main Line in Lower Merion, even if you are a Democrat or Independent, you know every year there is a tradition that the members of the Main Line Republican Women's Club does....they hold this big dinner and pay tribute to someone special.

This year it was John Templeton of Bryn Mawr.

This event is not for politicking, it's a feel good-celebrate-an-awardee event.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" class="align-right" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_fj6yC7x35ew/SAEtX78ZCGI/AAAAAAAAASU/srp8T1Xhkhg/s200/rogers+059.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5188478134958753890" />Have YOU Seen This Lawn Sign Stolen off a Widow's Lawn in Havertown?
Who would steal a widow's lawn sign? Pretty unbelievable, huh? But it is TRUE and we are appalled! A Havertown widow who asked for a Lance Rogers sign, has been a victim of petty theft and trespass because overnight into Saturday someone stole her lawn sign. The irony is that her deceased husband, whom she misses terribly, was a judge of elections in Havertown for decades we have been told! As a matter of fact, not only did he volunteer selflessly for his church, but every election as well.

Why Golly, since you brought up Chief Fallon and Lisa Paolino....

Dear Readers,

We have a new blogger to the site that has brought up a topic we hadn't really discussed...but now we will....and it is so funny, that like clockwork, up pops this person about 10 days before an election that their pal is in? Why it is so very déjà vu....sigh....we've been here before...

Anyway, One of our brave volunteer firefighters is upset because a candidate for political office purchased a photo from a local photographer about a 9/11 ceremony and used it in campaign literature. That man is Chief John Fallon from the Penn Wynne-Overbrook Hill Fire Company (different from Bryn Mawr). And very important point of fact: Chief Fallon's letter was not a "private" matter. And Research101? Slanderous? Why is everyone who disagrees with this candidate/commissioner always accused of atrocities?

What has Chief Fallon said that was untrue? Why don't you share Lisa's "gracious" response since you seem so intimately acquainted with the candidate and her campaign?

If this new friend on the SAC site knew what was what with volunteer fire fighters and emergency responders, they would know that this is kind of a big deal to them.

To suggest that Chief Fallon is a "political pawn" is simply astounding and very insulting to volunteer firefighters everywhere. Why? Because anything having to do with 9/11 is a HUGE deal - and it should be.

So, here is what we are borrowing from Webmaster Doug's website, which had not been on the SAC site until now...but since the topic was broached by a guest, and since we hear the Bulletin wrote about it, well, here, we will feature it:

Giza: Did Lisa Paolino misrepresent support from fire fighters?

Fire Chief John Fallon is not very happy with Lisa Paolino right now.

It seems that earlier in the month, she sent out campaign literature (pictured on right) in the mail which featured a photograph of Chief Fallon standing behind Lisa in full uniform. The implication here is that Lisa had his support, except... she didn't. Not only did he not support her, but he never gave her or anyone from her campaign permission to use his picture in her literature. What was Lisa thinking?

What's even worse is that this has had consequences for Chief Fallon, namely in that is caused his friends and neighbors to think that he supported Lisa, when just the opposite was true. I can only imagine how awkward that must have been, seeing your picture plastered all over some random candidate's political mailing and having to explain that to people.

Did I say Chief Fallon was not happy? Maybe that's an understatement, since he pulls no punches in his letter to Lisa. Here is an excerpt:

I have proudly served as a volunteer firefighter for 36 years. I have served as the Chief of the Penn Wynne-Overbrook Hill Fire Company for the last 7. As Chief, it has been my honor to lead a group of dedicated men and women who selflessly serve their community. Perhaps for a politician like you, the event memorialized in the photograph you hijacked was unmemorable. For me it was not. This image was taken at a memorial for the 343 firefighters whom lost their lives on September 11, 2001. It is truly heartbreaking that a politician would exploit this national tragedy to advance her political ambitions -- all for a good "photo op". Your conduct tells me all I need to know about your lack of respect and lack of understanding of the daily sacrifices made by volunteer firefighters, police, paramedics, and other first responders. Your campaign literature says what you want us to believe, but your conduct, in politicizing this memorial, has shown me the truth about you. You are unworthy of our support.

Wow. Nobody messes with Chief Fallon. Not even Chuck Norris Rick Astley.

For the curious, the full 2-page letter can be viewed here:

page 1
page 2

And here, let us quote our new friend from Rosemont who seems very upset:
Chief Fallon, a used political fall guy?
Submitted by Research101 on Sat, 2008-04-12 00:06. Politicians: Lisa Paolino

Is it just me or does anyone else find the recent comments and accusations
by Chief Fallon to be nothing but a purely underhanded and politically motivated
slanderous attack on Lisa Paolino?

The discovery? Shall we call it "Lisa Litter"? These little squarish cards with for a good time call on the front and discounted car wash coupons on the back? Hmmmm, we thought, who owns this Bryn Mawr Car Wash? (Well, the location has changed car washes so many times over the years, what's not to ask?)

Wanted: The Return of Stolen Lawn Signs

We have several uncofirmed reports from both sides of the aisle of stolen lawn signs? Seriously? Apparently, for some reason, someone or several someones feel the need to make Daylin Leach and Lance Rogers State Senate signs disappear?

Is this true? What are we, like ten years old?

And what's up with the almost billboard size campaign signs that look like "Elect Me For Ms. Universe" that some of our members have seen in HT? Honestly, they are as bad as the WaWa billboard above Bella Italia Pizza aren't they?

It is the right of every American to speak freely and to support candidates of their own choosing. So, campaigns should not stoop to stealing signs. And that goes for ANY campaign out there, not just ONE.

File under She Can Dish It Out, But She Can't Take It, Hormonal politics at work, or loads of endorsements are negative? Daylin, are you having fun watching all this?

Today, we have seen a press release that reduces us to fits of giggles, please, allow us to quote (the campaign is using SAC and Save Ardmore Coalition as "keywords" so how can we NOT find this stuff?):

Isn't it Funny How Political Candidates Have to Try To Use Our Popularity?

We love politics and we love campaign season, because without fail, something makes us giggle at least once a week.

Today it is the lastest press release from She Who Would Be King. The press release in itself isn't anything fabulous and basically says she got two Delco politicians to say she's cute (awwwww, maybe she'll get that Adolph guy a makeover?)

What is funny are the tags she uses at the end...she uses US...makes us think of a very funny rendition of a rather amusing rap song, huh?

State Representatives Bill Adolph And Thomas Killion Endorse Lisa Paolino For State Senate

CONTACT:
Alexis Bradley
Lisa Paolino for Senate
PHONE. 6107331802

KEYWORDS: Lisa Paolino, Paolino, Pennsylvania State Senate, 17th District, Republican, Connie Williams, Save Ardmore Coalition, SAC, campaign, state senate
SOURCE: Lisa Paolino for State Senate

It's all very droll, utterly predictable, darn amusing and somewhat pathetic....sigh, poor baby, we know it's tough to pimp for yourself and all, right? This candidate knows who is more interesting/important....The Save Ardmore Coalition! But hey, we're not singing the blues, we know we are the originals in community leadership, right?

Ahhhhhhh.....the sweet smell of politics

*UPDATE* Since we we first brought you this post yesterday, the post we referenced yesterday was pulled down. We are going to bring you this blogger's perceptions of the Lincoln Day Dinner and his desire for a nomination "do over".(Is that what they call a "Policial Mulligan"?) We noticed no reference was made to the other candidate, the candidate from Delaware County? Wouldn't this have made an ideal opportunity for her to rub elbows and plead her case to Ken Davis in person? HMMMMM. Guess we are too busy collecting signatures? Guess we got that idea for that crucially important e-worldwide press release from Guy Ciarorocchi of Tredyffrin? And if a candidate is their own media contact is that like a surgeon doing self-surgery?

From Yesterday:

Alrighty. This post serves no other purpose than to say enough. Yesterday, we chose to promote a new blog and new blogger from the other side of Montgomery County because quite frankly, he was the first to send out a citizen based list of questions to the candidates for the PA Senate seat in the 17th district. We did not agree with all questions posed, but we did appreciate the ones that were bi-partisan and sort of universal in nature (except for the underwear question as that is just TMI or "too much information").

And now, it's time for more on....politics as predictable

Pennsyltucky ain't got nothing on us educated and refined (?) folk from Montgomery County.....

Now this blogger we dicovered has his First Amendment Rights, and we aren't disputing that. We are curious as to motivation here...we are also curious as to why he thought the candidate for state senate from Delco should have been included in the Montco endorsement process the other night? Dang, doesn't Delco have the ability to do their own endorsements? Is Lance Rogers paying for the fact that so many in Montco are at odds with party leadership under the helm of Ken Davis?

"Oh Blogga' Please...."

LOL! "Oh Blogga' Please"

Our apologies to Bill Maher, but that comment is priceless, and with regard to his new show segment "Blogga Please", he would be amused by all this local election drama and undoubtedly find "New Rules" to be created just for our part of the world, eh?

Welcome to ElectionGate '08!

The race for the 17th is going to be interesting because it's pretty busy already. We have 3 confirmed candidates from the GOP corner, 1 confirmed from the Dems, with a rumor of yet another Dem?

Daylin Leach is the first to set up office - he choose Bryn Mawr - he is doing a good thing by renting an empty space in the Bryn Mawr Film Institute - the store front opposite MilkBoy Bryn Mawr - a mitzvah that YES deserves an "atta boy" because we ALL can agree that we LOVE the Bryn Mawr Film Institute, right? (We think every politician and candidate should support Bryn Mawr Film Institute and not just with words)
Now Daylin apparently has his website chosen: http://www.votedaylin.com/ - and yes, we are just going to say it now, get it over with and hope that no one feels the need to discuss it again because it backfired big time last time - once upon a time he had a blog. So friggin' what? If you are a politician and you have a blog or post on a blog, let's not be fool enough to throw a blog stone, okay? It just makes you the poster child of peurile even if you are exercising your 1st Amendment Rights...and amusingly enough and truthfully enough, when he was first starting out he did some stand up comedy. So what? That's old already.....

The Race for The 17th Senate District....Drama in The Making?

Run run run.... Will there be Republican Party drama? Who will end up being the "endorsed" candidate? Will it be Lance, or will it be one of the other two? Is Daylin the only Democrat running? Will Ross Perot make an appearance and be an election spoiler?

Hmmm...Goldilocks, Are There 3 GOP Bears for State Senate?

This horse race is getting down right busy on the Republican side....Now we knew Lance Rogers was running, and then we heard John Durante the old Sheriff in town was running, and up pops a new blog called

Lisa Paolino for State Senate, yes, http://paolinoforsenate.blogspot.com/

So, now we have an answer to the "is Delco going to field any candidates", eh?

So, is blogging not so bad anymore?

Interesting.

Radnor Commissioner Involved in Grade Fixing?

Oh, how outstanding - a commissioner who lives by the golden rule of "do as I say, not as I do"?

AC/DC said it best when they said:

If you're havin' trouble with your high school head
He's givin' you the blues
You wanna graduate but not in 'is bed
Here's what you gotta do -
Pick up the phone
I'm always home
Call me any time
Just dial
36 24 36 hey.....

Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
Dirty Deeds and they're Done Dirt Cheap

So, the Inquirer broke the news that Radnor Township Commissioner Lisa Paolino is involved in the Radnor Grade Fixing Scandal? A sitting commissioner?!

And to fix a grade, even gym class, that isn't parenting, is it?

See, case and point about what is wrong with some parents today - at the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, when parents disagreed with a teacher they apparently had a teacher fired and for what reason? Because the teacher didn't tell the parents what the parents thought they were paying to hear?

So anyway, here's the Inquirer article... Stay tuned.

Radnor Commissioners Take Taxpayer Funded Field Trip?

Before we get to trolling through Radnor Township, we wanted mention the fact that a couple large restaurants are dark: The Bryn Mawr Pub which started as a Great American Pub in Bryn Mawr across from the ACME (the former Marita's and Spada's booby bar if your're really a long timer)is out of commission with a "For Sale" sign hanging from the building...a quick call to The Bakery House (go buy some baked goods - super yummy stuff) verified they were deceased (the phone is disconnected too)- something to do with not getting a liquor license again?

What is the role of a Planning Commission? In Radnor?

Something someone needs to REALLY write about in local papers is what is the role of a planning commission? What is appropriate and inappropriate action from planning commission members acting as individuals dually within their appointed roles? Can they be Lone Rangers?

A planning commission consists of a board of appointed, not elected volunteers.

Municipalities across the region and locally describe their role in community like this:

Tredyffrin Township:
